Berlin, February 3, 2026 – Two fires broke out yesterday at provisional sleeping places for homeless individuals in Berlin. The incidents, which occurred in Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg, resulted in no injuries, according to police reports. A special arson unit of the State Criminal Police Office has launched investigations into both cases.
Incidents Under Investigation as Arson
The first incident took place in the afternoon in the Straße der Pariser Kommune in Friedrichshain. A witness observed an unidentified person setting fire to a moped and other items. The flames quickly spread to a construction container that was being used as a shelter for homeless people. The road had to be closed for approximately 40 minutes while firefighters extinguished the blaze.
Just a few hours later, another fire was reported at a homeless camp on the sidewalk of Yorckstraße in Kreuzberg. Passersby discovered the fire in the access area of a church. Several mattresses, a tent, and a garbage can were engulfed in flames, which also spread to a church door. Firefighters successfully put out this fire as well.
No Injuries Reported, Police Investigations Ongoing
Despite the destructive nature of the fires, authorities confirmed that no one was injured in either incident. The swift response of the fire department prevented further damage and potential harm. Both cases are being treated as suspected arson, and the State Criminal Police Office is actively pursuing leads to identify the perpetrators.
These incidents highlight the vulnerability of homeless individuals and the critical need for safe and secure shelter options. The investigation will aim to determine the exact cause of the fires and bring those responsible to justice.
