Munich, Bavaria, Germany, January 19, 2026 – Howard Arman, a figure already familiar to Munich’s classical music scene as the former director of the BR Choir (2016-2022), is set to take on a new leadership role. He will assume the artistic directorship of the Munich Bach Choir and the Munich Bach Orchestra starting from the 2026/27 season. This appointment marks a significant development for the esteemed ensembles, known for their dedication to the works of Johann Sebastian Bach.

Howard Arman: A Return to Munich’s Choral Landscape

Arman expressed his enthusiasm for the new position, stating, “The importance of these ensembles as cultural mediators can hardly be overstated. I am therefore delighted to continue their vibrant cultivation of the great choral works of the Baroque.” His return to a prominent leadership position in Munich underscores his deep connection to the city’s rich musical heritage.

The current artistic director, Johanna Soller, will be moving to the Netherlands to take on the artistic directorship of the Nederlandse Bachvereniging in the 2026/27 season. Her departure opened the door for a successor, with over fifty applications reportedly considered for the prestigious role.

A Personality of Great Charisma and Impressive Versatility

The board of the Munich Bach Choir and Orchestra cited Arman’s “personality of great charisma and impressive versatility” and his long, successful career as key factors in their decision. They believe this collaboration presents a unique opportunity for the choir to grow artistically, gain new perspectives, and continue its tradition of historically informed performance practice.

“For our choir, this collaboration is a special opportunity – to continue to grow artistically, gain new perspectives and at the same time continue what distinguishes us as an ensemble: the historically informed performance practice that we have developed in recent years and which we want to consistently deepen together with Howard Arman,” the board stated.

An International Career in Choral and Orchestral Conducting

Howard Arman’s extensive career began with training at the Trinity College of Music in London, followed by collaborations with renowned English ensembles. His significant artistic commitments include:

  • Salzburg Bach Choir (1983-2000)
  • MDR Rundfunkchor Leipzig (1998-2013)
  • BR Choir (2016-2022)

Beyond his work with choirs, Arman has held diverse roles as an orchestral conductor, serving as General Music Director in Altenburg-Gera, Music Director of the Lucerne Theatre, and first guest conductor at the Gärtnerplatztheater in Munich. His discography boasts numerous accolades, including the International Classical Music Award for his recording of “Caplet’s Le Miroir de Jésus” with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra.

The Legacy of the Munich Bach Choir

For over 60 years, the Munich Bach Choir has been dedicated to the intensive study and performance of Johann Sebastian Bach’s works. The amateur choir gained its excellent reputation particularly during the era of Karl Richter, establishing a strong tradition that continues to this day. Arman’s appointment signals a commitment to upholding and further developing this legacy, ensuring the choir’s continued prominence in the 21st century.

The transition in leadership is expected to be seamless, with both ensembles poised to benefit from Arman’s vast experience and artistic vision. The classical music community in Munich and beyond will undoubtedly watch with interest as Arman embarks on this new chapter with the Munich Bach Choir and Orchestra.
