Major Raids in Munich Uncover Potential Human Trafficking and Labor Exploitation
Munich, September 25 – Investigators from the Munich Main Customs Office have uncovered signs of human trafficking and labor exploitation during extensive raids on the hotel and gastronomy sectors. A total of eight establishments were searched, and dozens of employees were inspected.
The controls, which took place yesterday, involved not only customs but also the police, the immigration authorities, and the Federal Employment Agency. According to the Munich Main Customs Office, the authorities scrutinized six hotels, one restaurant, and one retail store. During these operations, 77 employees from 25 different countries of origin were checked.
Five Potential Victims of Human Trafficking Identified
In five cases, suspicions were confirmed that the individuals concerned could be victims of human trafficking for the purpose of labor exploitation. Investigators also identified one suspect. Furthermore, authorities registered 26 additional suspected cases involving possible violations of residence and asylum law, as well as provisions of social legislation.
The searches were part of Europe-wide control days coordinated by the EMPACT (European Multidisciplinary Platform Against Criminal Threats) platform. This initiative specifically targets various forms of organized crime in Europe.
These raids highlight an ongoing effort to combat organized crime and protect vulnerable individuals from exploitation within the European Union.
