Iran and Oman seek solution for Strait of Hormuz shipping amid US ultimatum

Muscat/Tehran/Berlin – Iran and Oman are engaged in discussions to regulate shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial waterway for global energy trade. Representatives from the foreign ministries of both countries, along with experts, are exploring options to ensure smooth passage through the Strait under the current regional circumstances, according to the Omani news agency.

US Ultimatum and Stalled Shipping

These talks coincide with an ultimatum issued by US President Donald Trump, who has threatened attacks on Iranian power plants if Tehran does not fully and “without threats” open the Strait for shipping by Easter Monday (US time, night of April 7 MESZ).

The Strait of Hormuz accounts for approximately 20 percent of the world’s oil trade. Since the outbreak of war on February 28, maritime traffic has virtually ceased. Iran’s control, coupled with warnings of mines, drone attacks, and the withdrawal of war risk insurance, has rendered passage for Western shipping companies almost impossible. Hundreds of tankers, container ships, and freighters are currently stranded in the region.

The Narrow Strait and Iran’s Claims

At its narrowest point, the Strait is only about 33 kilometers wide. The territorial waters of Iran and Oman completely overlap, leaving no neutral high-seas corridor. Iran claims control over the entire passage and plans to implement a toll system for transit.

Energy market expert Amena Bakr noted on X that since March 30, data analytics firm Kpler has observed a strategic division of shipping routes into an “Oman route” and an “Iran route.” The “Oman route” refers to vessels sailing far from Iranian waters and close to Omani territorial waters.

Background to the Crisis

The current impasse stems from heightened tensions in the region, particularly following the outbreak of conflict on February 28. The disruption to shipping in the Strait of Hormuz has significant implications for global energy markets, given the sheer volume of oil that transits through this chokepoint. The US ultimatum adds another layer of complexity to an already volatile situation, escalating the potential for military confrontation.

The economic impact of the halted shipping is substantial, affecting not only the direct shipping companies but also global supply chains and energy prices. The inability to move goods and oil freely through the Strait creates uncertainty and financial strain for numerous industries worldwide.

Diplomatic Efforts and Future Outlook

The ongoing discussions between Iran and Oman represent a diplomatic effort to de-escalate the situation and find a pragmatic solution that ensures the continued flow of maritime traffic. The involvement of foreign ministry representatives and experts suggests a serious attempt to address the complex legal and logistical challenges posed by the Strait’s unique geographical and political landscape.

However, the success of these talks remains uncertain, especially in light of the US’s firm stance and the historical tensions between the parties involved. The outcome will likely depend on a delicate balance of political will, economic pressures, and the willingness of all stakeholders to compromise. The international community is closely watching these developments, recognizing the critical role the Strait of Hormuz plays in global stability and economic well-being.

As the deadline approaches, the pressure on all parties to reach a resolution intensifies. The potential consequences of a failure to agree on a viable solution are far-reaching, encompassing not only regional security but also the stability of global energy supplies and international trade.
