KLIMA Network Thuringia Presents Research Findings in Berlin
Berlin, March 29, 2026 – The Thuringian KLIMA-N project, focusing on “Pathways to Transformation for Sustainable Universities,” recently presented its comprehensive research findings at two significant events in Berlin. The presentations took place during a results conference for the funding programme followed by the 7th BMFTR Symposium “Sustainability in Science.”
Results Conference for “Pathways to Transformation for Sustainable Universities”
From March 18 to March 19, 2026, the results conference for the funding programme “Pathways to Transformation for Sustainable Universities” was held in Berlin. The KLIMA-N project, representing Thuringia, showcased its research findings, with a particular emphasis on education for sustainable development. Adjunct Professor Bettina Hollstein and Professor Björn Machalett from the University of Applied Sciences Erfurt were instrumental in presenting these findings, highlighting the critical role of service learning in fostering sustainability within academic institutions.
7th BMFTR Symposium “Sustainability in Science”
Following the results conference, the 7th BMFTR Symposium “Sustainability in Science” – Shaping Successful Transformation – Innovations for Sustainable Universities and Research Institutions” took place from March 19 to March 20 at the same venue. This symposium, organized by the Ministry (BMFTR) and the German Rectors’ Conference (HRK), served as a crucial platform for discussing the challenges and success factors in the transformation process at German universities. The event featured a diverse program including lectures, workshops, and poster presentations, which facilitated in-depth discussions among interested participants.
KLIMA-N’s Contribution to Sustainability Transformation
During the symposium, the KLIMA-N project also presented a poster detailing its project results. This presentation effectively highlighted Thuringia’s significant contributions to the broader field of sustainability transformation within the academic sector. The poster attracted considerable attention, fostering valuable exchanges and discussions among attendees.
Value of Inter-Network Exchange
Adjunct Professor Dr. Bettina Hollstein, who serves as the Presidium Representative for Sustainability at the University of Erfurt and is a subproject leader in the KLIMA-N project, underscored the importance of such gatherings. “The exchange with other networks, the mutual encouragement, and learning from examples of best practices in other parts of Germany are particularly valuable in addressing the challenges we face in a regional context. The conference and symposium were so helpful for the continued work on the KLIMA-N project,” stated Professor Hollstein.
Key Focus Areas and Future Work
The discussions at both events centered on overcoming obstacles and identifying conditions for success in the ongoing transformation process towards more sustainable universities. The insights gained from these interactions are expected to significantly inform and enhance the continued efforts of the KLIMA-N project in Thuringia.
