Köhlbrand Bridge in Hamburg Closed Again for Weekend Maintenance
Hamburg, May 22 – The Köhlbrand Bridge is once again completely closed for the weekend due to planned repair and maintenance work, as announced by the Hamburg Port Authority (HPA). The closure commenced on Friday evening and is scheduled to continue until Monday morning at 5 AM. Following this, traffic will be initially reopened, but with a significant restriction: it will only be able to flow in a single lane via the north side, operating as a contraflow system. This single-lane restriction is set to remain in place until May 31st at 10 PM.
Further Closures and Traffic Management
Just two weeks after this current closure, the bridge will experience its third full weekend shutdown. This upcoming closure will coincide with a full closure of the A7 motorway, including the Elbe Tunnel, further impacting traffic flow in the region.
Three additional full closures of the Köhlbrand Bridge are planned for this year: two in September and one in October. During each of these closures, traffic will be rerouted via the Kattwyk Bridge, located approximately two kilometers to the south.
Background: Weight Restrictions and Bridge Condition
These ongoing closures and maintenance efforts are a direct consequence of the existing weight restriction on the Köhlbrand Bridge. Due to its deteriorating condition, the bridge is currently only permitted for vehicles weighing up to 44 tons. This restriction has necessitated longer detours for heavy port transports, which previously utilized the bridge directly.
To alleviate the impact on port operations, the Autobahn GmbH has introduced temporary permanent permits for heavy and oversized transports on the A7 motorway, valid until the end of November. This measure aims to streamline logistics by eliminating the need for freight forwarders to apply for individual permits for each journey.
A7 and Elbe Tunnel to Close in Mid-June
In addition to the Köhlbrand Bridge closures, the A7 motorway will be impassable between Hamburg-Stellingen and -Heimfeld from June 12th due to the construction of the new tunnel control center. This closure will also last for an entire weekend, adding to the traffic challenges in Hamburg.
Numerous Bridge Closures Planned for 2026 in Hamburg Port
The Köhlbrand Bridge alone is slated for complete closure on six weekends this year for renovation work, highlighting the extensive infrastructure challenges facing Hamburg’s port. The overall investment requirement for the maintenance and expansion of the Hamburg port in the coming years is estimated at eight billion euros, with the majority of this sum allocated to bridge infrastructure.
Call for Preservation of Freihafenelbbrücke Sections
Amidst these infrastructure projects, the Denkmalverein Hamburg (Monument Association Hamburg) and the Left Party faction are advocating for the preservation and relocation of sections of the Freihafenelbbrücke (Free Port Elbe Bridge) to a different site. This initiative underscores the city’s ongoing efforts to balance modern infrastructure needs with historical preservation.
Impact on Traffic and Commuters
The series of bridge and motorway closures, particularly the Köhlbrand Bridge, are expected to cause significant traffic disruptions in Hamburg. Commuters and freight traffic will need to plan their routes carefully, utilizing alternative bridges and factoring in potential delays. The A1 and A7 motorways have already experienced initial traffic problems during the Whitsun holiday period.
The continuous maintenance and repair work on critical infrastructure like the Köhlbrand Bridge are essential for ensuring the long-term functionality and safety of Hamburg’s vital transport networks. While these measures inevitably lead to temporary inconveniences, they are crucial for sustaining the city’s economic activities and maintaining its position as a major European port.
