Laim District to Test Humorous Slogans on Bins to Combat Litter in Munich

Munich, January 10, 2026 – The Laim district in Munich is grappling with a persistent litter problem, a concern unanimously acknowledged by its district committee (BA). In a novel approach to tackle this issue, the Green party within the BA has proposed an unconventional solution: adorning public waste bins with humorous slogans. The aim is to encourage citizens to dispose of their waste properly, ideally with a smile.

Laim is set to become a pioneer in Munich with this initiative, though similar schemes are already in place in cities like Hamburg and Berlin. Vienna also successfully employs witty phrases on its bins.

Humorous Slogans on Munich Bins: A Solution for Laim’s Litter Problem?

Discussions within the BA enthusiastically explored how to best infuse the bins with a touch of South German charm. Initial suggestions included drawing inspiration from Vienna’s successful campaign. However, the ultimate goal is to tailor the slogans to Munich’s unique character.

“It would be wonderful if the slogans could be crafted using the Munich dialect. With this proposal, we don’t want to be overly prescriptive at this stage,” stated Nicola Fritz (Greens), chairperson of the Environment, Climate, and Tree Protection subcommittee.

City to Review Potential Pilot Project

The final decision regarding the specific slogans to be placed on the bins will rest with either the Department for Climate and Environmental Protection (RKU) or the Munich Waste Management Company (AWM). An alternative suggestion of holding a competition to select the best slogans was also put forward.

The proposal was approved by the BA with three dissenting votes. The city administration will now assess whether Laim can proceed as a pilot project to determine the effectiveness of humorous slogans in making the city cleaner.
