Munich’s Mittlerer Ring Faces Months of Traffic Jams Due to Bridge Renovation
Munich, January 9th – Motorists on Munich’s Mittlerer Ring are advised to prepare for extensive traffic disruptions as the city’s building department embarks on a lengthy renovation project of the bridge over Dachauer Straße on Landshuter Allee. The works are scheduled to commence on January 20th and are expected to continue until the end of December.
The 1971-built bridge is showing its age, with significant damage to its expansion joints, supports, pillars, and ramp structures. Consequently, the building department must replace the heavily trafficked steel expansion joints and repair other bridge components and ramp structures. Additionally, two of the bridge’s pillars will require reinforcement.
Phased Traffic Restrictions Expected
Traffic restrictions will vary depending on the progress of the construction. Intermittently, the lanes adjacent to the ramp retaining walls will need to be narrowed. From late May to late October, Landshuter Allee will be reduced to a single lane in each direction in the bridge area. Temporary restrictions will also be necessary beneath the bridge itself. Pedestrians and cyclists will be diverted, and parking spaces under the bridge will be unavailable for the entire duration of the construction.
The tram line 20 will not be affected by the works, and the “Olympiapark West” stop will remain accessible from all directions at all times, according to the department.
Part of a Broader Infrastructure Program
This renovation is part of the “Coordinated Structural Maintenance Program for Bridges,” approved by the city council in December 2023. Other ongoing projects include the new construction of the Kreuzhof bridges, which carry the A95 motorway, and the renovation of the Hackerbrücke, slated to begin in mid-2027. In total, the city is responsible for the maintenance of 632 bridges and underpasses. The Mittlerer Ring is expected to remain a construction zone with potential for traffic jams, with the reconstruction of the Donnersbergerbrücke anticipated in the 2030s.
The building department emphasizes the necessity of these extensive repairs to ensure the long-term safety and structural integrity of the bridge, which is a crucial part of Munich’s infrastructure.
