Munich/Berlin (MH) – Lydia Grün will continue to lead the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München (HMTM) for another four years. The University Council re-elected the Essen-born president, the institution announced on Wednesday. Negotiations with the Bavarian Ministry of Arts are still pending.
Lydia Grün’s Leadership and Achievements
Grün, a cultural manager, musicologist, and publicist, has been at the helm of the HMTM since the 2022/23 academic year. During her tenure, she has “further developed the university with a clear compass, great innovative strength, and a keen sense for people,” stated Bavaria’s Minister of Science and Arts, Markus Blume (CSU). He added, “Under her leadership, the HMTM has further established itself as a top university with national and international appeal.”
Grün expressed her gratitude to the University Council for their trust. “In the next four years, we will jointly set important directions for the HMTM – not only with regard to the major construction project of the HMTM campus development,” she remarked.
Background and Experience
Born in 1976, Grün taught as a professor of music education at the Detmold University of Music before her time in Munich. From 2017 to 2021, she served as an expert on the Council for Cultural Education. From 2013 to 2019, she was the managing director of the “Netzwerk Junge Ohren” association. Prior to that, she worked as a music consultant at the Lower Saxony Ministry of Culture and as the managing director of Musikland Niedersachsen. Since October 2025, Grün has also served as the honorary president of the German Music Council.
Future Outlook and Campus Development
The re-election of Lydia Grün signals a continuation of the strategic direction taken by the HMTM. Her focus on innovation and human-centric development is expected to guide the university through upcoming challenges and opportunities, including the significant campus development project. This project aims to modernize and expand the university’s facilities, further solidifying its position as a leading institution in music and theater education.
The Bavarian Ministry of Arts’ final approval is a formality, as Minister Blume’s supportive statements indicate strong governmental backing for Grün’s leadership. Her extensive experience in various capacities within the cultural and educational sectors positions her well to navigate the complexities of university administration and foster academic excellence.
The HMTM, under Grün’s continued leadership, is poised to strengthen its national and international presence, attracting talented students and faculty from around the world. The emphasis on both artistic and academic development, coupled with a forward-looking approach to infrastructure, suggests a promising future for the institution.
This re-election underscores the confidence placed in Grün’s vision and her proven ability to steer a prominent cultural and educational institution. The coming years will see the implementation of key initiatives aimed at enhancing the student experience, fostering groundbreaking research, and enriching the cultural landscape of Munich and beyond.
The university community anticipates a period of continued growth and innovation, building on the foundations laid during Grün’s initial term. The focus on campus development, in particular, is expected to transform the physical environment of the HMTM, providing state-of-the-art facilities for learning, practice, and performance.
All stakeholders, including students, faculty, and administrative staff, will be looking forward to the successful execution of these plans under the sustained leadership of President Lydia Grün.
