Extensive Bridge Closures to Impact Hamburg Port Traffic in 2026
Hamburg, February 24, 2026 – Drivers in Hamburg are advised to prepare for significant traffic disruptions in the port area throughout 2026, as the Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) has announced a series of extensive bridge closures for essential maintenance and repair work. The closures will affect several vital arteries, including the Köhlbrandbrücke, Retheklappbrücke, and Kattwyk-Bahnbrücke.
Köhlbrandbrücke to See Multiple Weekend and Lane Closures
The prominent Köhlbrandbrücke is scheduled for complete closure on six weekends for necessary repair and renovation work. These full closures will occur on the following dates:

In addition to these full weekend closures, the Köhlbrandbrücke will also experience single-lane closures. From May 18 to May 22, the south side will be restricted to one lane, followed by a single-lane closure on the north side from May 25 to May 29.
Retheklappbrücke to Undergo Two Significant Closures
The Retheklappbrücke is also slated for two complete closures this year. The first closure will run from April 20, 6 AM, to April 29, 5 PM, and the second from June 15, 6 AM, to July 5, 5 PM. These closures will affect the road bridge, including pedestrian and cyclist paths. During the April closure, the railway bridge will also be fully closed, leading to temporary restrictions for shipping traffic.
The HPA stated that the April closure is for the maintenance of the drawbridge’s machinery, while the June and July closure will focus on renewing the road surface.
Kattwyk Railway Bridge Closed for Over Two Months
From July 11, 8 AM, to September 30, 5 PM, the Kattwyk railway bridge, including its pedestrian and cycle paths, will be fully closed. Pedestrians and cyclists will, however, be able to use the road bridge as an alternative. The closure is necessary for maintenance and optimization work on the lift bridge’s machinery, alongside related track work.
The HPA also confirmed that the status of the Freihafenelbbrücke, currently closed following a ship accident, is still under review, with plans for its future being developed.
Calls for Preservation of Freihafenelbbrücke
Amidst the ongoing discussions surrounding the Freihafenelbbrücke, the Denkmalverein Hamburg (Monument Association Hamburg) and the Left Party faction are advocating for the preservation and relocation of parts of the bridge to another site.
Traffic Accident Statistics for 2025 Show Significant Decline in Fatalities
In related news, Hamburg’s traffic safety report for 2025 indicates a substantial reduction in traffic fatalities. According to police statistics, 21 people lost their lives in road accidents in 2025, a near 50% decrease from the 39 fatalities recorded in the previous year.
Elbtunnel Reopens, but Strike May Cause Further Delays
The A7 closure at the Hamburg Elbtunnel, which was lifted on Sunday evening, may still contribute to traffic congestion. A warning strike is expected to continue until Tuesday morning, potentially causing further delays around the Elbtunnel area.
25 Million Euros Allocated for Hamburg’s Rivers and Waterways
Federal Environment Minister Carsten Schneider (SPD) recently presented a grant notification of 25 million euros to the “Stiftung Lebensraum Elbe” (Elbe Habitat Foundation). This funding is aimed at supporting initiatives for the maintenance and improvement of Hamburg’s rivers and waterways.
These comprehensive bridge closures and ongoing traffic developments underscore the need for residents and commuters in Hamburg to stay informed and plan their routes accordingly throughout the coming year.
