Fatal Assault in Munich: 45-Year-Old Man Dies After Punch to the Head
Munich, February 20 – A 45-year-old man has died in Munich after being struck in the head during an altercation in the early hours of January 31. Police announced the tragic outcome of the incident at a press conference on Friday, confirming that a suspect has been apprehended.
According to police spokesperson Thomas Schelshorn, emergency services were alerted around 2:00 AM on January 31 to a report of an unconscious person lying on Sonnenstraße. The victim, a 45-year-old Macedonian national residing in Munich, was found severely injured. The assailant had fled the scene prior to the arrival of the authorities.
Investigation Reveals Brain Hemorrhage and Subsequent Death
The victim was immediately transported to a hospital, where medical examinations revealed he had suffered a brain hemorrhage. His condition rapidly deteriorated, prompting the homicide unit to take over the investigation. Tragically, the man succumbed to his injuries on February 4, as confirmed by Schelshorn.
The incident reportedly occurred after the victim and his companion, along with the suspect and his companion, had left a pub near Sendlinger Tor. As they walked along Sonnenstraße, near house number 31, the victim “exuberantly” put his arm around the suspect’s shoulder. The suspect initially tolerated this gesture but then delivered a fatal punch to the victim’s head.
Suspect Identified Through Video Footage and Arrested in Aachen
Through extensive investigation, including the review of video surveillance footage, police were able to identify the suspect. In coordination with police officers in Aachen, the 21-year-old man, who resides in Aachen, was arrested on February 18.
Authorities have confirmed that the suspect is a member of the fan scene of the football club Alemannia Aachen and has a nationwide stadium ban. On the day of the incident, January 31, Alemannia Aachen had played against TSV 1860 in Munich. However, spokesperson Schelshorn stated that there is no apparent connection between the football match and the assault.

The Munich Police Department has issued a public appeal for witnesses who may have observed anything related to the incident in the area of Sonnenstraße or Sendlinger Tor during the specified time.
