Further south, the rail line between Hamburg-Harburg and Bremen was also affected by delays and partial cancellations. According to the railway company Metronom, a signal malfunction near Buchholz in der Nordheide and a track closure due to ongoing construction work were the primary causes. The RE4 and RB41 lines were specifically impacted, with passengers advised to monitor announcements and platform displays for information.
ICE Cancellations on Hamburg-Hanover Route
The intercity express (ICE) services between Hamburg and Hanover also suffered disruptions. Deutsche Bahn confirmed a technical fault on this route, leading to cancellations of ICE trains travelling between Rostock, Hamburg, and Munich, as well as in the opposite direction. Passengers were urged to use the remaining long-distance services. The technical issue was expected to be resolved by Monday afternoon.

The rail problems coincided with a weekend of record-breaking temperatures across Hamburg, Lower Saxony, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, and Schleswig-Holstein. While the heat is expected to subside at the beginning of the week, its immediate impact on infrastructure was evident. The high temperatures also led to other incidents in the region, including a 22-year-old man reportedly drowning in the Elbe and Hamburg’s water consumption reaching a yearly peak of 412.2 million litres.
