Munich, Bavaria, Germany – Munich Airport and Lufthansa have announced a substantial expansion of Terminal 2, a joint venture between the airline and the airport operator. The project, dubbed the “T-Stiel” extension, aims to increase the terminal’s capacity by an additional 10 million passengers annually, with completion anticipated by 2035.
Lufthansa and Airport Partnership Fuels Growth
The expansion is primarily driven by Lufthansa’s plans to grow its long-haul fleet. Currently, Terminal 2, operated jointly by Lufthansa and the airport authority since 2003, serves as the main hub for Lufthansa and its Star Alliance partners. The successful cooperation agreement has been extended until 2056, underscoring the long-term commitment to this partnership.
Jost Lammers, CEO of Munich Airport, emphasized that this significant increase in passenger capacity – bringing Terminal 2’s total to 46 million passengers per year – will be achieved without the need for a new runway. This highlights the efficiency and strategic planning behind the expansion.
Bavarian Premier Hails ‘Mega-Deal’
Bavarian Minister President Markus Söder (CSU) lauded the expansion as a “mega-deal” for Munich’s aviation sector. He highlighted the creation of new jobs and an improved offering for passengers as key benefits of the project. The announcement was made during a ceremony celebrating Lufthansa’s 100th anniversary.
Terminal 1 Expansion Nears Completion
Prior to the Terminal 2 expansion, Munich Airport is also preparing for the opening of the Terminal 1 extension. Scheduled to commence operations in mid-April, this addition will allow for the processing of up to six million extra passengers annually, further enhancing the airport’s overall capacity.
This development comes as air travel continues to boom, with Spain and the USA remaining popular destinations for travelers. The increased capacity at Munich Airport is expected to cater to this growing demand, solidifying its role as a vital international gateway.
The close collaboration between Lufthansa and Munich Airport, particularly in the operation of Terminal 2, provides the airline with greater influence over planning and operations. This contrasts with Frankfurt Airport, Germany’s largest, which maintains sole control over its terminal operations.
The expansion plans are a testament to the continued growth and strategic importance of Munich Airport, promising enhanced connectivity and economic benefits for the region.
