Express S-Bahn to Munich Airport Remains a Distant Prospect
Munich, January 27 – The long-discussed express S-Bahn service to Munich Airport is unlikely to materialize in the near future, according to a recent response from the Mobility Department to an inquiry by the Free Democratic Party (FDP). The department cites overloaded railway lines and a critical bottleneck at the airport station as primary obstacles to implementing faster connections.
FDP’s Proposals for Improved Airport Connectivity
The FDP’s proposal, submitted in March 2023, included several key demands:
- Conversion to Electronic Interlocking Systems (ESW) for the S1 line section between Laim and Neufahrn.
- Densification of block spacing on the aforementioned section.
- Upgrading the existing third track between Laim shunting yard and Moosach for partial use by S-Bahn and/or Regional Express trains.
- Additional stops for Regional Express trains (RE2 to Regensburg and RE3 to Passau) in Neufahrn to attach or detach a train section for onward travel to the airport.
Bavarian Railway Company: Insufficient Capacity for Express Services
The Bavarian Railway Company (Bayerische Eisenbahngesellschaft) stated in its official position that despite Munich’s existing S-Bahn connections (S1 and S8 lines operating every 20 minutes), which are considered “efficient,” there are ongoing considerations by the state government to accelerate these connections, for instance, by introducing an express S-Bahn that bypasses intermediate stops.
However, the company questions the definition of an “efficient connection,” as current S-Bahn journeys from Munich Central Station to the airport take approximately 40 minutes. This extended travel time adds to the overall journey for passengers who often need to arrive early at the airport.
The statement further emphasizes that the railway lines leading to the airport are “often so heavily utilized” that additional express trains cannot be operated within the existing capacity. This applies to both the S1 and S8 lines. “The infrastructure at the airport station itself, in particular, proves to be a bottleneck that cannot handle additional traffic from an express connection,” the statement adds.
Ongoing Construction Projects and Future Prospects
The Mobility Department highlights ongoing construction projects under the “Erdinger Ringschluss” initiative. These include the construction of a bridge-like “Munich Airport West flyover” to enable simultaneous movements of the S1 and S8 S-Bahn lines at the airport junction, as well as the installation of an electronic interlocking system.
The department clarifies that an express S-Bahn service from Munich to the airport will not be feasible without significant infrastructure expansion. It also points out that the regional trains (RE2 and RE3) proposed by the FDP are unsuitable for airport travel. The RE2 line has limited capacity, which is needed for services to Freising and Landshut, while the RE3 line has been using double-decker trains since December 2024, which cannot enter the airport tunnel.
