Munich Airport Inaccessible by Train for Several Days Due to Construction
Munich, May 4 – Munich Airport will experience a multi-day disruption in its train services, affecting both S-Bahn and regional express connections from Nuremberg. This significant inconvenience for travelers and airport staff is a result of extensive construction work aimed at improving the railway infrastructure.
The disruption is scheduled to commence late Monday evening at 10:30 PM and is expected to conclude early Friday morning at 3:40 AM. During this period, trains heading to the airport will terminate at the penultimate stop, Besucherpark. The RE22 regional express service originating from Nuremberg will also end its journey earlier, in Freising.
Impact on Passengers and Operations
Passengers and airport employees traveling to and from Munich Airport will be required to switch to replacement buses at the Besucherpark station. This measure is in place to mitigate the impact of the railway closure on daily operations and passenger flow.
The Munich S-Bahn system is a vital component of Bavaria’s public transport network, serving an average of 840,000 passengers on weekdays. The current construction work is part of a broader series of infrastructure projects planned for this spring across various sections of the S-Bahn network. Earlier this year, in March and April, similar closures affected the main line in Munich’s city center.
Ongoing Infrastructure Improvements
At the airport, a new electronic signal box is under construction and is slated for completion by the end of the year. Further disruptions are anticipated in May and June, with additional track closures planned for the main line.
These construction efforts are critical for enhancing the long-term efficiency and reliability of the Munich S-Bahn, which has faced challenges with punctuality and service disruptions. The goal is to ensure that the transport system can operate normally and effectively in the future.
The city of Munich and Deutsche Bahn have jointly issued advisories regarding these changes, urging commuters and travelers to plan their journeys accordingly and allow for additional travel time.
