Munich Airport’s New Terminal 1 Pier to Open on April 13, 2026
Munich, Bavaria, January 23, 2026 – Munich Airport has announced that its new Terminal 1 Pier will officially open on April 13, 2026. This significant expansion, costing 665 million euros, is one of Bavaria’s largest current infrastructure projects and aims to substantially increase the airport’s capacity and enhance passenger experience.
The new pier, spanning approximately 360 meters and covering a total area of around 95,000 square meters, is designed to accommodate up to six million additional passengers per year. It will be capable of handling up to twelve short and medium-haul aircraft simultaneously.
Extensive Testing and Preparations Underway
Since late October, Munich Airport has been conducting extensive testing of various operational procedures, including boarding, baggage logistics, and passenger guidance. Emergency drills have also been carried out to ensure seamless operations, communication, and responsiveness under challenging conditions.
Jost Lammers, CEO of Munich Airport, emphasized the strategic importance of this development. “With the Terminal 1 Pier, we are specifically investing in the future viability of our airport… The pier is a central element of our long-term infrastructure strategy,” he stated.
Enhanced Passenger Experience with New Facilities
The new Terminal 1 Pier features six levels, with three dedicated to passenger processes such as security checks, waiting areas, and extensive commercial retail and catering facilities. Passengers will also benefit from new retreat and relaxation zones.
A highlight of the new pier will be two exclusive lounges:
- The “Lounge World”: A 1200-square-meter lounge offering panoramic views of the Alps, spread over two floors. It will include catering services, a gallery level with a bar, a children’s play area, co-working spaces, and quiet zones.
- An Emirates Lounge: Covering 900 square meters, this lounge will be operated by the airline Emirates, providing premium services for its passengers.
Further test runs are planned before the official opening to ensure all systems are fully functional and ready to welcome passengers.
This expansion is expected to solidify Munich Airport’s position as a major international hub, offering increased comfort and quality for travelers.
