Munich, March 7 – The Munich Cathedral Choir School, an institution dedicated to fostering musical talent and community spirit, has announced a recruitment drive for new members. The school is particularly interested in primary school-aged children who enjoy singing and wish to pursue a comprehensive vocal education within a choir setting. An information afternoon for interested families is slated for March 14, providing a unique opportunity to learn more about the school’s offerings and the commitment involved.
Information Session for Aspiring Choristers
The information session will take place at the Frauenkirche, the Munich Cathedral, on March 14. During this event, children will have the chance to collectively learn and sing a song, offering them a taste of the choir experience. According to a press release from the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising, the Cathedral Choir School is looking for boys and girls from primary school age upwards who are eager to contribute musically to church services at the Frauenkirche.
A Comprehensive Musical Education and Community
The Cathedral Choir School emphasizes a holistic approach to musical education. Children and young people typically meet for rehearsals up to two afternoons per week, where they are introduced to a diverse repertoire of sacred and secular choral music. Beyond rehearsals, the school offers additional support services, including lunch and homework supervision. For those interested in further musical development, instrumental lessons can be arranged. The Legacy and Structure of the Cathedral Choir School
Currently, approximately 120 boys and girls, ranging from six years old to young adults up to 25, attend the Cathedral Choir School. The institution is structured into several distinct groups: the Domsingknaben (Cathedral Choir Boys) and the Mädchenkantorei (Girls’ Cantorei) rehearse in four different choir levels, complemented by the Junge Domkantorei (Young Cathedral Cantorei), which comprises singers of adolescent age. These groups actively participate in church services and concerts held at the Munich Liebfrauendom, enriching the spiritual and cultural life of the city.
Participation in the Cathedral Choir School extends beyond local performances. Members regularly attend rehearsal camps and embark on national and international choir tours, providing them with invaluable experiences and exposure to diverse musical traditions and cultures.
A Rich History Dating Back to the 16th Century
The tradition of the Munich Cathedral Choir School dates back to the 16th century. It was Duke Albrecht V who established the Albertinum, an institution named after him, which provided twelve boys with free schooling, singing education, accommodation, and meals. In return, these students contributed to the church music. The renowned court Kapellmeister Orlando di Lasso served as the first music prefect of the Albertinum, underscoring the historical significance and high musical standards of the institution from its very inception.
