Munich, February 25, 2026 – The city of Munich is embarking on a year-long celebration to commemorate 150 years of its iconic tram service. The inaugural tram journey took place on October 21, 1876, from Promenadeplatz to Maillingerstraße, and the Munich Transport Company (MVG) is marking this significant milestone with a diverse program of events.
Historic Trams to Return to Service
As part of the anniversary, the MVG announced plans to restore several historic tram vehicles to operational condition. This initiative will allow Munich residents and visitors to experience the history of the tram firsthand, offering a unique opportunity to “experience” the past. This move aims to connect the present generation with the rich heritage of public transport in the city.
A Year of Celebrations and Engagements
The celebrations extend beyond historic rides. The MVG will publish a special anniversary brochure detailing the tram’s journey through the decades. Additionally, a series of exhibitions will be hosted at the MVG Museum, showcasing artifacts, photographs, and stories from the tram’s 150-year history. Various guided tours and lectures will also be offered, providing deeper insights into the development and impact of tram services on Munich’s urban landscape.
The popular Munich-Tram is also slated for a return, offering city tours during the summer months. These tours will provide passengers with fascinating facts and historical anecdotes about the Bavarian capital as they travel along the tram’s route.
Grand Festival Weekend in October
The highlight of the anniversary year is expected to be a grand festival weekend scheduled for Saturday, October 17, and Sunday, October 18. This event promises a varied program for the public, designed to engage all ages and celebrate the tram’s enduring legacy in the city.
The festive year will conclude with the traditional Christkindltram, adding a special touch to the holiday season.
Official Opening Ceremony
The anniversary year was officially opened today by Mayor Dominik Krause and MVG Managing Director Ingo Wortmann. Their presence underscores the significance of this milestone for the city and its public transport system.
The tram has played a pivotal role in Munich’s development, facilitating urban growth, connecting communities, and adapting to the changing needs of its residents. This year-long celebration is a testament to its lasting importance and a look forward to its future contributions to sustainable urban mobility.
