Hofbräuhaus Donation Drive: Ensuring Every Munich Child Starts School with a Smile
As the summer holidays in Bavaria draw to a close and school bells prepare to ring again in mid-September, thousands of Munich children are eagerly anticipating their first day of school on September 15, 2026. A beloved German tradition for first-graders is the ‘Schultüte’ – a large, often cone-shaped gift filled with school supplies, small toys, and sweets. However, for many families, the financial burden of school supplies and a well-stocked school cone can be overwhelming. This is where the ‘Bunte Münchner Kindl’ project steps in, advocating that no child should start their school journey empty-handed.
The ‘Bunte Münchner Kindl’ Project: A Decade of Support
Since the 2016/17 school year, the ‘Bunte Münchner Kindl’ project, part of the ‘Wir helfen München’ foundation, has been dedicated to providing up to 2,000 disadvantaged children annually with quality school materials. This initiative aims to foster equal opportunities in education, from kindergarten all the way to graduation. The project’s patron is Petra Reiter, wife of Munich’s former Lord Mayor Dieter Reiter, who proudly shared, “Last year, we donated 300 school cones, 80 of which were collected right here at the Hofbräuhaus.”
More Than Just Financial Aid: Bridging Cultural Gaps
Petra Reiter highlights that the need for support isn’t always purely financial. She recalls an instance where a Greek first-grader arrived at school with two bouquets of flowers but no school cone because his parents were unfamiliar with the German tradition. Thanks to the quick action of a volunteer, a school cone was delivered, ensuring the boy’s first day was complete. Reiter emphasizes, “Proper school material is the foundation for a successful school career. We want to prevent exclusion from the first to the last day of school, promote integration, and enable educational justice. We help children whose parents cannot or can barely afford basic school equipment, regardless of their social status, origin, or gender.”
The gratitude of these children is evident in the heartfelt, self-written and self-drawn thank-you letters displayed at the donation drive’s launch at the Hofbräuhaus.
A Crucial Initiative for Educational Equity
Dr. Michael Hoderlein, Rector of the primary school in Berg am Laim, a school that has frequently benefited from the project, praised the initiative: “I ask you, what does it do to a small child when they come to school on the first day and all the other children have school cones and materials they can work with beautifully, and they have nothing themselves? For this reason, this campaign is incredibly important because it actively tackles the problem and improves educational opportunities.”
How You Can Help: Donate School Cones and Supplies
As the ‘Bunte Münchner Kindl’ foundation receives no state funding, it relies entirely on donations. For the current “School Cones for All!” campaign, they are collecting filled school cones or school backpacks for needy children. Donations can be dropped off at the Hofbräuhaus reservation office (1st floor, Platzl 9) from Monday, September 7, to Saturday, September 12, 2026, between 11:00 AM and 5:00 PM daily.
You can donate:
- Filled school cones or backpacks: Ready-to-go packages for children.
- Individual supplies: Crayons, modeling clay, wax crayons, small books, notebooks, card games, hair clips, or non-melting sweets.
Monetary donations are also greatly appreciated and used to purchase much-needed school materials, which are then packed by volunteers. The project supports not only first-graders but also older students up to their final year of high school with essential supplies like notebooks, paint boxes, school bags, pens, pencil cases, and workbooks.
