Munich Resident Outraged After Etihad Changes Thailand Flight Destination

Munich, May 31 – Klaus Suppé, an 86-year-old resident of Giesing, Munich, found himself in a frustrating situation after Etihad Airways unilaterally rebooked his flight to Thailand. Suppé had booked a flight to Chiang Mai for late May in early February, costing him approximately 720 Euros. However, six weeks after his booking, he received an email from Etihad stating that his flight had been rebooked to Bangkok, a city located 700 kilometers away from his intended destination.

Unilateral Destination Change Sparks Frustration

Suppé, a frequent traveler to Thailand, expressed his dismay at the airline’s decision. “The two cities are 700 kilometers apart,” he stated, emphasizing the significant inconvenience caused by the change. According to consumer rights, airlines are not permitted to arbitrarily change a passenger’s destination, and customers have the right to a free cancellation in such instances.

Attempting to cancel his flight through Etihad’s website proved fruitless for Suppé. He then tried to contact the airline via a service number he found online, which he believed to be Etihad’s official hotline. The person on the other end offered him a cancellation but demanded a 200 Euro fee, which was later reduced to 150 Euro. Suppé grew suspicious of this demand, especially when the representative seemed to arbitrarily set the cancellation fee. He promptly had his credit card blocked as a precaution.

Etihad’s Response and Refund Confirmation

Suppé subsequently reached out to Etihad in writing and also contacted a local newspaper to highlight his predicament. This led to a breakthrough in his case. Etihad informed him that the service number he had called was not an official airline contact. The airline confirmed that, according to their policies, any applicable cancellation fee is always deducted from the already paid ticket price.

Furthermore, Etihad confirmed that Suppé was entitled to a full refund. “We can confirm that your booking has already been earmarked for a refund. The full amount of 722.94 Euros will be refunded within up to 45 days via the originally chosen payment method,” the airline communicated to Suppé.

As of now, Klaus Suppé is still awaiting his refund. He has postponed his entire trip to Thailand and canceled his hotel reservations. “A new booking for the same travel period would have been far too expensive so close to departure. Plus, I’m still waiting for the money from the refund,” he explained. Suppé has stated he will book his next flight with a different airline.

Broader Implications for Air Travel and Consumer Rights

This incident highlights the importance of passengers being aware of their rights when airlines make significant changes to their bookings. While airlines retain some flexibility in managing flights, unilateral changes to destinations often trigger specific consumer protections, including the right to a full refund or rebooking without additional cost.

Travelers are advised to verify contact information for airlines through official channels to avoid potential scams, as experienced by Suppé. Documenting all communications with airlines and seeking assistance from consumer protection bodies or media outlets can also be crucial in resolving such disputes effectively.

The case of Klaus Suppé serves as a reminder for both travelers and airlines regarding the obligations and rights within the travel industry, particularly concerning unexpected alterations to booked itineraries.
