Three Bavarian Restaurants Receive Michelin Stars, THE CLOUD by Käfer Leads with Two
Munich, July 2 – Bavaria’s fine dining landscape is celebrating a remarkable achievement as three of its restaurants have been elevated to the prestigious ranks of Michelin-starred establishments. In the unveiling of this year’s Guide Michelin Germany, THE CLOUD by Käfer in Munich was awarded two stars, a truly exceptional recognition for a new entry.
High Praise for Munich’s THE CLOUD by Käfer
The Guide Michelin justified its decision by highlighting the restaurant’s extraordinary concept: “With its modern ‘Culinary Nomadism,’ the restaurant in Munich’s BMW Welt presents an unconventional concept.” Head chef Jens Madsen dedicates each year to a different global region, focusing on its unique culinary characteristics. “The outstanding execution of this special idea earned the newly included restaurant two stars right from the start,” stated Michelin in its press release.

Eichstätt and Klingenberg Also Celebrate New Stars
Munich also swept the special awards. While THE CLOUD by Käfer was additionally honored as “Opening of the Year 2026,” the Sommelier Award went to Noris F. Conrad of Munich’s Tantris. Michelin lauded his “profound expertise” and his charming, approachable demeanor. Conrad’s accessible way of guiding guests through the wine list significantly contributes to the overall experience of the two-star restaurant.
However, other parts of Bavaria also have reason to celebrate: two more restaurants were awarded their first Michelin stars. New additions include Staderer in Eichstätt, led by head chef Benjamin Schöneich, and Cølbo in Klingenberg am Main, with head chef Moritz Techet.
Good to Know: The Origins of the Michelin Star
What many might not know is that the coveted Michelin stars originate from a tire manufacturer. The French company Michelin first published its restaurant guide in 1900, initially as a practical handbook for motorists offering tips on workshops, hotels, and restaurants. It wasn’t until 1926 that the now world-famous Michelin stars were introduced. Since then, the Guide has been recognized globally as one of the most significant accolades for top restaurants.
Michelin Director: Regionality Gaining Importance
At the pinnacle of Bavarian fine dining, the status quo remains unchanged. JAN and Tohru in der Schreiberei in Munich, along with ES in Grassau, continue to hold the highest rating of three Michelin stars.
“They demonstrate extensive expertise, creativity, and an unceasing commitment to high quality. The large number of awards is the best proof of this and a sign of well-deserved recognition,” said Gwendal Poullennec, International Director of the Guide MICHELIN, regarding German fine dining. Michelin also observes that regionality and seasonality are gaining increasing importance. More and more chefs are collaborating with responsible producers, paving the way for a future-oriented gastronomy.
Overall, the Guide Michelin 2026 for Germany includes 12 three-star, 48 two-star, and 279 one-star restaurants. (Source: www.news.michelin.de, www.michelin.com, www.guide.michelin.com)
