Munich, March 1 – Passengers traveling between Waterburg and Munich will soon enjoy a faster and more direct journey as plans for the electrification and expansion of the S-Bahn line progress. The German railway’s current schedule indicates that the section between Ebersberg and Waterburg will be electrified by the end of the decade.
Electrification of the Ebersberg-Waterburg Section
A spokesperson for the Ministry of Transport confirmed that the 18-kilometer stretch between Ebersberg and Waterburg train station (Rosenheim district) will be electrified by 2029. Currently, this segment is exclusively served by diesel-powered regional trains, requiring passengers from Munich to transfer in Ebersberg if their destination is Waterburg.
With the electrification, these diesel trains will be replaced by quieter and faster electric trains, significantly improving the travel experience. The Free State of Bavaria is investing over seven million euros in this electrification project, with the remaining costs covered by the federal government.
Future Expansion: Double Tracks and Enhanced Service
Following the initial electrification phase, further expansion of the route, including the addition of a second track, is planned. This subsequent development aims to further enhance capacity and efficiency on this vital commuter line.
