Munich, March 22 – Passengers using the Munich S-Bahn system will face considerable disruptions in the coming weeks due to extensive construction work. The measures include the renewal of switches near Isartor and preparatory work for the second trunk line, necessitating a one-and-a-half-week closure of the central trunk line through the city center during the Easter holidays.
Central Trunk Line Closure and Switch Renewals
The main trunk line closure is scheduled from March 31 to April 13. During this period, four switches, some of which date back to the S-Bahn’s early days, will be replaced. Simultaneously, preparatory work for the construction of the second trunk line will be carried out, including adjustments to platforms and new access points.
According to Deutsche Bahn, the S-Bahn service will be significantly altered during the construction phase. Several lines will operate only on partial routes or be diverted, with alternative connections via U-Bahn and regional trains recommended. Some lines, such as the S7, will remain unaffected.
Impact on Airport Connections and Other Stations
Even before and after the main closure, there will be station cancellations at central locations like Isartor and Rosenheimer Platz, attributed to preparatory measures for the construction work.
Munich Airport is already experiencing disruptions. Due to the construction of a new electronic interlocking system, train services to and from the airport will be interrupted during two periods: currently until Monday morning, March 23, 5:00 AM, and again from April 13, 10:10 PM, to April 17, 5:00 AM. During these times, S-Bahn and regional train services will be replaced by buses, which will shuttle between the airport and the stations in Neufahrn (S1), Ismaning (S8), and Freising (regional trains).
