Munich’s Core S-Bahn Line Faces Easter Holiday Disruptions

Munich, March 31 – Commuters and travelers in Munich are advised to prepare for significant disruptions on the S-Bahn Stammstrecke (main line) during the upcoming Easter holidays. Starting from Tuesday, March 31, at 10:40 PM, and lasting until Monday, April 13, at 4:40 AM, S-Bahn services will be restricted due to extensive construction work. The primary reasons for these limitations include the renewal of switches at Isartor and further preparatory work for the second Stammstrecke project.

Widespread Service Adjustments and Limited Access

During this period, only the S7 S-Bahn line will operate regularly. Other S-Bahn lines will either terminate prematurely or bypass certain stations. However, thanks to recent adjustments in the interlocking system, S-Bahns on the Stammstrecke can now turn around at all stations, according to Deutsche Bahn. This means that two lines coming from the west can now travel further through the tunnel to Stachus, a significant improvement from previous disruptions where services often ended at Hackerbrücke. This adjustment aims to ensure that the city center remains well accessible despite the ongoing construction.

Alternative Routes and Public Transport Options

Passengers traveling from the west will find the S1 bypassing Hackerbrücke and continuing to the main station, while the S2 and S3 will extend through the tunnel to Stachus. The S4 and S8 will terminate early in Pasing, with the S6 continuing from there to Heimeranplatz. From the east, the S2 and S8 will end at Ostbahnhof, the S5 at Giesing, and the S6 will only run to Trudering. At these three stations, passengers can transfer to the U-Bahn (subway) to continue their journey towards the city center. Consequently, no replacement bus services are planned for these routes.

For those traveling between Pasing and the main station, regional trains offer an additional alternative. Deutsche Bahn assures passengers that planning their journey via the DB Navigator, München Navigator, other MVV apps, the website, or ticket machines will automatically provide the best available connections.

Extensive Infrastructure Upgrades Underway

The disruptions are multifaceted, addressing several critical infrastructure projects. Firstly, Deutsche Bahn is undertaking a complete renewal of all four switches at Isartor, which date back to the S-Bahn’s inception. This complex underground operation involves installing 650 new sleepers and approximately 1,400 tons of ballast. Specialized ventilation, dust extraction, and wetting systems are being utilized to maintain air quality during these works. In addition to the switches, two emergency exits are also being renovated.

Secondly, the closure is being utilized to advance the construction of the second Stammstrecke. This includes the partial removal of platform roofs, the establishment of a construction site access road, and preparations for the new western platform underpass. This underpass will connect the future underground S-Bahn station at Friedenstraße and the Werksviertel with Haidhausen, providing additional access points to platforms and the station building at Orleansplatz.

Post-Holiday Adjustments and Airport Travel Disruptions

While most services on the Stammstrecke are expected to return to normal by the first school day after the holidays, S-Bahns will still pass through Isartor and Rosenheimer Platz without stopping until April 15, 4:40 AM. This is attributed to the dismantling of the ventilation technology used during the construction.

Travelers planning to fly after the holidays should be aware of further disruptions affecting journeys to Munich Airport. From Monday, April 13, 10:10 PM, to Friday, April 17, 5:00 AM, S-Bahn and regional train services to the airport will be interrupted. This is due to the installation of a new electronic interlocking system for the “Erdinger Ringschluss” project. During this period, passengers will need to transfer to replacement buses in Neufahrn (S1), Ismaning (S8), and Freising (RE22).

These comprehensive construction efforts are part of a broader strategy to modernize and expand Munich’s S-Bahn network, aiming to improve efficiency and capacity for the future.
