Munich, Bavaria, Germany – Tensordyne, a startup with roots in Silicon Valley and Munich, announced on Monday the introduction of its groundbreaking Napier AI chip. This innovative processor, produced by TSMC using a 3-nanometer process, promises to significantly outperform Nvidia in AI inference tasks, particularly for large language models, by consuming up to 75% less power.

Founded in 2017 as Recogni, Tensordyne has developed the Napier chip based on a radical mathematical approach: a Logarithmic Number System (LNS). This system converts complex multiplications into simple additions, drastically reducing computational power requirements – a critical advantage in the processing of large language models.

Technical Specifications and Performance

The Napier chip is a powerhouse, featuring 138 billion transistors. It delivers 2.1 PetaFlops at FP8 precision and is equipped with 144 GB of HBM3e memory and 256 MB of on-chip SRAM. Despite its impressive capabilities, the thermal design power remains a moderate 300 watts. The chip’s development was a collaborative effort with Broadcom and HPE Juniper.

Direct Comparison with Nvidia

Tensordyne presents compelling figures when comparing Napier with Nvidia’s Blackwell and Rubin architectures. The TDN72 Pod, a system integrating 72 Napier chips, is projected to process large language models four times faster while consuming only one-fifth of the power of a comparable Nvidia GB300 system.

The efficiency gap widens at the rack level. A full Tensordyne rack, housing 288 chips, achieves 608 PetaFlops with a power consumption of 120 kilowatts. To match this performance, nine Nvidia racks would be required, consuming approximately 1.5 megawatts of power.

Economically, Tensordyne estimates the cost of processing one million tokens at 11 Euros, a stark contrast to the estimated 150 Euros on conventional GPU infrastructure. This could translate into an additional annual revenue of up to 33 million Euros per rack for data center operators.

Market Launch and Future Outlook

The tape-out on June 15 marks the transition from design to manufacturing for the Napier chip. Beta access through cloud providers is anticipated by the end of 2026, with the first system deliveries scheduled for the second quarter of 2027. Commercial sales are expected to commence in the latter half of 2027.

Tensordyne has already secured orders and demand registrations exceeding 200 million Euros, indicating strong market interest. The timing of Napier’s introduction is strategic, as analysts project global AI expenditures to reach 2.59 trillion Euros in 2026, with approximately two-thirds allocated to inference tasks – precisely Napier’s specialized domain.

Nvidia’s Response and Market Dynamics

Nvidia, a dominant force in the AI chip market, is not standing still. On the same day of Tensordyne’s announcement, Nvidia revealed a six-year partnership with Sharon AI to install 40,000 Blackwell GPUs in Australia. Furthermore, Nvidia introduced the “Vera” CPU, featuring 88 cores optimized specifically for AI agents.

Infrastructure providers like Delta Electronics are already preparing for the future by delivering 800-volt DC components starting in the third quarter of 2026. These components are crucial for the high power densities of upcoming Blackwell and Rubin platforms, which could require between 600 kW and 1 MW per rack.

The question remains whether a startup employing alternative mathematics can truly challenge the established market leader. The industry awaits the first deliveries with keen interest to observe the real-world impact of the Napier chip.
