Munich is set to welcome a new regional train station at Poccistraße, a project spearheaded by Deutsche Bahn on behalf of the Free State of Bavaria. Construction is anticipated to commence in 2029, with the station expected to be fully operational by 2032, according to an announcement from the Department of Mobility.
Munich Invests in Enhanced Accessibility with Second Access Point
While Deutsche Bahn is responsible for the station’s construction, the Munich City Council has taken a significant step to improve its accessibility. Initially, plans included only a western access point. However, the city council has now resolved to finance a second, eastern access point, which will be located between the KVR (Department of Public Order) and the Municipal Vocational School for Childcare, near the Bahnwärter-Thiel site.
The cost for this additional access point, including elevators, is estimated at approximately 6.8 million Euros. The Department of Mobility projects that the federal government will cover about 2.3 million Euros of this expense.
No S-Bahn Connection Planned, Despite Political Wishes
The development of the regional train station has been welcomed by Green Party city councilor Paul Bickelbacher. However, he expressed a desire for the station to be designed to accommodate S-Bahn trains in the future, a long-standing wish among members of the Green Party and SPD for a southern S-Bahn ring.
Bickelbacher lauded the decision to fund the eastern access point, noting that the western access would have involved a 100-meter-long, tube-like corridor along a noise barrier, potentially causing significant detours for many commuters. SPD city councilor Barbara Likus suggested the possibility of artistically designing this wall.
New Station to Serve Rosenheim and Chiemgau Routes
The new station is intended to serve trains traveling to Rosenheim and the Chiemgau region. Currently, residents in the Poccistraße area wishing to travel to these destinations must first take the U-Bahn and S-Bahn to the Ostbahnhof. The project has experienced delays, as the initial target for the first trains to stop at the station was 2026.
Project Delays and Future Outlook
The current timeline indicates a delay of six years from the original projection. Despite this, the development signifies a crucial step in enhancing regional connectivity for Munich. The investment in an additional access point underscores the city’s commitment to creating a more user-friendly and accessible public transport network.
The new station at Poccistraße is expected to significantly reduce travel times and improve convenience for residents in the area, connecting them more directly to regional destinations. The discussions surrounding potential S-Bahn integration highlight ongoing aspirations for a more comprehensive public transport system in Munich.
The project, while focused on regional trains, reflects a broader strategy to optimize Munich’s transport infrastructure. The city’s financial contribution to the eastern access point demonstrates a proactive approach to addressing urban mobility needs and fostering better integration within the public transport network.
Further details regarding the project’s progress and any potential adjustments to the timeline will be closely monitored by local authorities and the public.
