Munich Triathlon Set for Grand Debut at Olympiapark in 2027
Munich, September 2, 2026 – The iconic Olympiapark is set to host the inaugural Munich Triathlon on July 25, 2027. This highly anticipated event marks the return of triathlon to the Olympic grounds approximately five years after the successful European Championships 2022, once again transforming the venue into a vibrant stage for swimming, cycling, and running.
The event, a collaborative effort between the German Triathlon Union (DTU) and World Triathlon, is designed to cater to both recreational athletes and international professionals. The premiere will feature a sprint distance and a short distance (Olympic distance), offering opportunities for ambitious newcomers and experienced age-group athletes alike.
A Course with Unique Character
Participants can look forward to a course that promises a distinctive experience. The swimming segment will take place in the Olympiasee, while the cycling route will lead from Olympiapark towards the west before returning. The running course will entirely traverse the Olympiapark grounds, culminating in a challenging section on the Olympiaberg before a triumphant finish at Hans-Jochen-Vogel-Platz, adjacent to the Olympiastadion.
Olympiapark’s role extends beyond merely being a venue. During the European Championships 2022, Munich witnessed a captivating triathlon festival, characterized by densely packed spectator areas and an extraordinary atmosphere along the course. The Munich Triathlon 2027 aims to build upon this legacy, opening a new chapter in Munich’s triathlon history.
Strong Support from City Officials
Verena Dietl, Sports Mayor of the State Capital of Munich, expressed her enthusiasm for the upcoming event. “That this high-caliber triathlon event is coming to Munich is a strong signal for our city and for our Olympic bid. We have our unique sports facilities, we have the flair, the enthusiasm of the people, and the charisma as an open-minded sports metropolis of absolute world-class,” she stated.
Nils Hoch, Deputy Managing Director of Olympiapark München GmbH, echoed these sentiments, recalling the success of the 2022 European Triathlon Championship. “I gladly look back on the Triathlon European Championship as part of the European Championships 2022 in Olympiapark. Especially the enthusiasm of the spectators, who really accompanied all athletes to the finish line. I am very happy if this unique atmosphere can be felt again in the next two years and Olympiapark experiences another first-class sports highlight.”
DTU Aims for Thousands of Participants
Oliver Schiek, Secretary General of the DTU, confirmed the organization’s goal for the upcoming year. “With the Munich Triathlon, we are creating a race at one of Germany’s most renowned sports locations. The combination of Olympiasee, Olympiaberg, and the finish line directly at the Olympiastadion makes the Munich Triathlon one of the most attractive triathlon experiences in Germany. Accordingly, we expect several thousand starters for the premiere.”
The Munich Triathlon will offer various options for participants to experience the course, with both the sprint and short distances passing through Olympiapark. This makes the event suitable for experienced triathletes as well as those looking to experience competitive triathlon for the first time.
