Munich, March 11, 2026 – The two prominent universities in Munich, Ludwig-Maximilians-University (LMU) and Technical University (TUM), have once again been granted the coveted ‘Excellence University’ status within Germany’s highly competitive federal excellence program. This re-accreditation ensures substantial financial support for both institutions for another seven years, solidifying their positions at the forefront of German academia.
Munich Remains an ‘Epicenter of Excellence’
The decision was announced by Science Minister Markus Blume (CSU), who lauded the achievement, stating, “Munich is and remains the epicenter of excellence.” This continued recognition underscores the consistent high-level performance and groundbreaking research conducted at both LMU and TUM.
The ‘Excellence University’ status is not merely a title; it is accompanied by significant financial benefits. In the current funding period, which concludes this year, both LMU and TUM each received 20 million Euros annually from the federal government. This amount was further supplemented by an additional 6 million Euros per year from the state government, bringing the total annual funding to 26 million Euros for each institution. This substantial funding is crucial for supporting advanced research projects, attracting top-tier faculty, and providing world-class educational opportunities.
Two Decades of Uninterrupted Excellence
Remarkably, LMU and TUM are the only universities that have continuously held the ‘Excellence University’ title since the program’s inception two decades ago. This unparalleled track record highlights their sustained commitment to academic excellence and innovation.
While the ‘Excellence Commission’ has so far only made decisions regarding the re-applications of existing ‘Excellence Universities,’ attention is now turning to the selection of potential new ‘Excellence Universities’ in October. Minister Blume indicated that the Julius-Maximilians-University of Würzburg, located in Lower Franconia, stands a good chance of joining this elite group. “Now all eyes are on Würzburg,” Blume commented, signaling the potential for another Bavarian university to achieve this prestigious status.
The federal excellence program aims to strengthen Germany’s position as a leading research and innovation hub by fostering top-tier universities and promoting cutting-edge scientific endeavors. The continued success of LMU and TUM in this program is a testament to their dedication to advancing knowledge and contributing to societal progress.
The re-confirmation of their ‘Excellence University’ status will allow both LMU and TUM to further invest in their research infrastructure, recruit leading international scholars, and enhance their educational offerings, ensuring their continued prominence in the global academic landscape.
