Munich, October 9 – Hellabrunn Zoo in Munich has announced a significant donation of €100,000 from Stadtsparkasse Munich. The funds are earmarked for the enhancement of the Przewalski’s wild horse enclosure, a crucial step in bolstering the zoo’s breeding program for this endangered species.

New Enclosure to Boost Breeding Program

The Przewalski’s wild horses, considered the last true wild horses in the world, recently welcomed new offspring at Hellabrunn Zoo for the first time in ten years. This donation will facilitate the relocation of the herd to a newly designed enclosure next to the domestic yaks. Previously, the Przewalski’s horses shared an enclosure with Bactrian camels, a setup that hindered successful breeding for both species.

Rasem Baban, Hellabrunn Zoo Director, emphasized the importance of this development: “The redesign of the Przewalski’s horse enclosure is an important step for Hellabrunn. The fact that we can count on such a long-standing and reliable partner is of great importance to us.”

Conservation Efforts for a Critically Endangered Species

Przewalski’s horses were once considered extinct in the wild. However, thanks to dedicated breeding programs in several European zoos, reintroduction efforts have been underway since the 1990s. For example, in June 2026, Przewalski’s mares from a Berlin breeding program and stallions from Prague were transported to Kazakhstan to re-establish a natural population in the wild.

These horses play a vital role in the biodiversity of their habitats. Seeds that get caught in their hooves or fur are widely distributed along their routes, contributing to the spread of plant life.

Visitors to Observe Horses in New Habitat

Soon, visitors to Hellabrunn Zoo will be able to observe the Przewalski’s horses in their newly designed enclosure, located between the Hellabrunn Arena and Mühlendorf. This will offer an opportunity to learn more about this critically endangered wild horse species and the ongoing conservation efforts.
