Munich’s Glamour Fades: Restaurateur Käfer Laments Loss of 80s Charm

Munich, April 14 – Renowned restaurateur Michael Käfer laments the disappearance of Munich’s former glamour and dazzling personalities. “It has become a completely different Munich. Munich has become a business city. There is more money in the city. Earlier, in the 80s, Munich was an art and culture city,” Käfer told the “Augsburger Allgemeine” (Tuesday).

The Vanishing Charm of 80s Munich

Käfer vividly recalls a different era for the Bavarian capital. “You could still see the war damage. Bavarian charm characterized the city.” He noted that many actors lived in Munich, which fostered a vibrant and exciting scene. “This scene no longer exists in the same way today,” said the entrepreneur and Oktoberfest host. Despite these changes, he emphasized that he would not want to live anywhere else, stating that Munich remains “a wonderful city.”

A City Transformed: From Art to Business

Käfer’s observations highlight a significant shift in Munich’s identity. He describes the city’s evolution from a cultural epicenter, rich with artistic expression and bohemian flair, to a more economically driven metropolis. This transformation, according to Käfer, has led to a loss of the unique character that once defined Munich. The influx of wealth, while signifying economic growth, has seemingly overshadowed the city’s artistic and cultural vibrancy.

Missing Munich’s Originals and the “Schickimicki” Era

“The ‘Schickimicki’ Munich has disappeared, even if the aura from past times persists.” The Bavarian capital no longer shines as brightly as it once did. “This is also because all these shimmering personalities like Rudolph Moshammer, Walter Sedlmayr, Helmut Fischer, or Helmut Dietl are no longer around. I miss these Munich originals.” He also expressed a longing for former Minister President Franz Josef Strauß: “The CSU legend was good for Munich and Bavaria.”

The Impact of Social Media on Celebrity Culture

Käfer also pointed out a significant change in how celebrities celebrate. In the past, it was crucial “to be in the newspaper the next day after a party. Otherwise, the party wasn’t good. Today, in times of social media, celebrities want to remain anonymous. We try to make that possible for them.” This shift reflects a broader societal change, where privacy has become a more valued commodity for public figures, contrasting sharply with the earlier desire for media attention.

The Enduring Appeal of Munich

Despite his nostalgic reflections, Käfer’s affection for Munich remains strong. His comments underscore a common sentiment among long-time residents who have witnessed their cities evolve. While the specific “Schickimicki” culture of the 80s may be a thing of the past, Munich continues to be a city of considerable appeal, albeit with a different character. The challenge for Munich, as for many global cities, is to balance economic development with the preservation of its unique cultural heritage and local identity.

Käfer’s insights offer a poignant commentary on the ephemeral nature of urban culture and the enduring power of memory in shaping our perception of places.
