Munich’s Prinzregententheater Embraces Solar Power: A Model for Sustainable Heritage Preservation
Munich, August 4, 2026 – The historic Prinzregententheater in Munich has officially announced the installation of a new photovoltaic system, marking a significant step towards sustainable energy consumption. With an anticipated output of 269 kilowatt-peak (kWp), the system is projected to supply over 30% of the electricity required by both the theater and the August Everding Bavarian Theatre Academy, which also resides within the building.
Innovative Energy Storage for Evening Operations
The system comprises approximately 800 modules meticulously installed on the roof surfaces of the Prinzregententheater. To ensure a consistent power supply, especially during the energy-intensive evening performances, two storage units have been integrated. These units will store the electricity generated during the day, making it available when demand is highest.
A Harmonious Blend of Heritage and Modernity
The Prinzregententheater, designed by architect Max Littmann and opened in 1901 in Munich’s Bogenhausen district, is a protected historical monument. Since 1993, it has also been home to the August Everding Bavarian Theatre Academy, one of the most important training centers for stage professions in the German-speaking world.
General Conservator Mathias Pfeil lauded the project, stating, “This project has resulted in a creatively very successful solution that respects the listed building and at the same time makes an important contribution to sustainable energy supply. The system preserves the homogeneity of the roof surface and exemplifies that monument-compatible photovoltaic solutions are also possible on important historical monuments.”
Significant Investment in Green Technology
The current expenditure for the project stands at approximately 1.1 million euros. These funds were fully provided to the August Everding Bavarian Theatre Academy by the Bavarian State Ministry of Science and Art, underscoring the state’s commitment to both cultural heritage and environmental responsibility.
Marcus Blume, the State Minister for Science and Art, emphasized the project’s broader implications: “The Prinzregententheater proves: monument protection and climate protection are not a contradiction. Where supposed opposites meet, solutions with exemplary character emerge with prudence, technical know-how, and the close cooperation of all involved.”
