Munich – Sono Motors, the Munich-based start-up, officially ceased its operating business on Friday, July 31st. Following a decade of development work, insolvency proceedings have been initiated. The company stated that despite extensive discussions with potential investors, it was unable to secure sustainable long-term financing.

Sono Motors’ Journey: From Solar Car Dreams to Insolvency

Sono Motors gained prominence since 2016 primarily for its ambitious project, the Sion solar-electric car. This vehicle was designed to integrate solar cells into its bodywork to generate electricity, thereby extending its range. However, the Sion never progressed to series production.

According to the company, the latest financial difficulties were triggered by the withdrawal of its parent company, Sono Group N.V. In March 2026, the parent company announced its immediate cessation of funding for the solar division.

Subsequently, managing directors Denis Azhar and Jan Schiermeister initially took over Sono Motors GmbH. During a restructuring phase, various investor discussions were held. However, sufficient follow-up financing could not be secured.

“The fact that we ultimately could not secure the financing is a bitter disappointment,” Azhar explained. He added that discussions with potential financiers were intense until the very end.

The Sion Solar Car Dream Collapses

Originally, Sono Motors aimed to launch the Sion as a comparatively affordable electric car. Thousands of supporters reserved the vehicle or participated in financing campaigns. By early 2023, the company reported over 44,000 private reservations and commercial pre-orders.

Nevertheless, the necessary funds for series production were not raised. In February 2023, Sono Motors discontinued the Sion program. The company then shifted its focus to a less capital-intensive business model, concentrating on solar solutions for buses, trucks, vans, and commercial vehicle fleets.

However, even with this strategic reorientation, the company failed to achieve lasting economic stability.

Sono Motors’ Solar Technology Now for Sale

In the wake of the insolvency, Sono Motors’ core technological portfolio is now seeking a new owner. The assets for sale include the Sono Solar brand, intellectual property, hardware components, and technical documentation.

The offering also encompasses:

  • The solar integration technology developed for the Sion.
  • Solar charge controllers for electric vehicles.
  • Further power electronics.
  • Digital solar data services.

Management expressed hope that a buyer would acquire the entire business or at least individual segments to further develop the products, which the company claims are market-ready. Specific interested parties have not yet been disclosed.

End of a Ten-Year Start-up Story

Managing Director Schiermeister described the insolvency as a “hard blow.” He extended his gratitude to the employees, customers, partners, and the community who supported the company over the years.

There remains a possibility that parts of the developed technology could be preserved. For Sono Motors itself, however, a ten-year start-up journey that began with the vision of an affordable solar car has come to an end, for now.
