New Cycle Path in Berlin Offers a Unique View of BER Airport
Berlin, July 18, 2026 – Cyclists in Berlin now have a new, comfortable route to experience the Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) up close. A long-planned section of the “Runway 3” cycle path has been completed, transforming a former sand track into a 4.9-kilometer asphalt path. This new development significantly enhances the cycling experience around the capital’s airport.
Previously, those wishing to cycle around BER Airport had to contend with unpaved sections. The completion of this new segment changes that, making the circuit much more enjoyable. The path runs directly along the airport fence, providing cyclists with an unusual perspective of aircraft taking off and landing.
Improved Infrastructure for Cyclists
The newly asphalted section boasts a width of 3.5 meters and includes additional passing areas, offering ample space for cyclists. This upgrade not only improves comfort but also safety for users. Instead of experiencing the airport from inside the terminal, riders can now immerse themselves in the airport atmosphere from their bicycle seats.
The expansion eliminates one of the last major gaps in the circular cycle path around the airport. The route is designed not only for daily commuters but also for weekend excursions and regional tours. Importantly, the path is exclusively for bicycle and agricultural traffic, ensuring a dedicated and safe environment for cyclists.
Further Expansion of the BER Airport Loop Planned
The completion of this new section brings a continuous cycling tour around BER significantly closer. According to the “Gemeinde Schönefeld,” the goal is to make the region more attractive for both everyday commutes and leisure tours.
For aviation enthusiasts, the route offers an added appeal. While planes take off and land on one side, the cycle path on the other side leads through the airport’s surroundings. This new route combines outdoor activity with a view that even experienced cyclists don’t encounter every day.
The new cycle path is part of a broader initiative to promote sustainable mobility and enhance recreational opportunities in the Berlin region. It joins other innovative cycling projects, such as the world’s longest “solar cycle path” in the Netherlands and the permanent pop-up cycle paths in Paris, highlighting a growing global trend towards improved cycling infrastructure.
