New Bridge Over the Bille: Connecting Hammerbrook and Rothenburgsort
Hamburg, June 25 – A new bridge designed for pedestrians and cyclists will soon connect the two Hamburg districts of Hammerbrook and Rothenburgsort. The design for the bridge was unveiled on Thursday, with construction slated to commence in 2028.
“This is the last puzzle piece,” stated Environmental Senator Katharina Fegebank (Greens), referring to the planned bridge. It aims to bring together two urban areas that are set for significant development in the coming years. The bridge will link the PARKS area at the flood basin with the New Huckepackbahnhof.
Completing the Alster-Bille-Elbe Green Corridor
The bridge over the Bille river will fill the final gap in the envisioned Alster-Bille-Elbe Green Corridor. Once completed, this corridor will allow pedestrians and cyclists to travel unimpeded from the Outer Alster to Entenwerder.
Consequently, the area at Bullerdeich, formerly a recycling center, is set to be transformed into a green space. On the opposite side of the Bille, the New Huckepackbahnhof is being developed into a vibrant quarter for commerce, culture, and sports, which will also house the planned Elbdome multi-purpose arena.
Construction to Begin in 2028
Work on the flood basin and the steel-timber construction of the new bridge is scheduled to start in 2028. The plans for this ambitious project will be publicly exhibited at the Forum HafenCity Horizonte on Lola-Rogge-Platz and at Haspa Rothenburgsort.
Senator Fegebank emphasized the strategic importance of the bridge in the urban development of Hamburg. The connection between Hammerbrook and Rothenburgsort is seen as crucial for improving accessibility and fostering community growth in these rapidly evolving districts. The project is part of a broader initiative to enhance green spaces and sustainable transport options within the city.
Public Engagement and Future Vision
The public exhibition of the bridge plans will provide residents and stakeholders with an opportunity to review the designs and understand the scope of the project. This initiative underscores Hamburg’s commitment to transparent urban planning and community involvement.
The Alster-Bille-Elbe Green Corridor, with the new bridge as its centerpiece, is expected to become a significant recreational and commuting route. It will offer residents and visitors a continuous green pathway through the city, promoting healthier lifestyles and reducing reliance on motorized transport. The integration of green spaces with commercial and cultural hubs aims to create a dynamic and sustainable urban environment.
The project aligns with Hamburg’s long-term vision for urban development, which prioritizes ecological sustainability, improved quality of life for residents, and the creation of attractive public spaces. The new bridge is anticipated to be a landmark structure, symbolizing the city’s forward-thinking approach to infrastructure and environmental planning.
The development at the New Huckepackbahnhof, including the Elbdome, is expected to draw further investment and create new opportunities for businesses and cultural institutions. The synergy between the green corridor and these new developments is designed to make Hammerbrook and Rothenburgsort even more attractive places to live, work, and visit.
Officials anticipate that the bridge will not only serve as a functional crossing but also as an aesthetic addition to the urban landscape, blending modern design with environmental considerations. The use of steel and timber in its construction reflects a commitment to both durability and natural integration.
The detailed plans and visualisations available at the public exhibitions will offer a comprehensive insight into the architectural and engineering aspects of the bridge, as well as its anticipated benefits for urban mobility and environmental quality.
