Freising, June 23 – The planned concert arena near Munich Airport, designed to accommodate around 20,000 people, has cleared a significant hurdle. The Freising city council, where the arena is to be built, approved two changes that create the planning basis for construction, according to the city and SWMunich Real Estate GmbH. Lorenz Schmid, managing director of the project developer, described this as a milestone.
Four Years of Planning Process Conclude Successfully
The municipal development plan procedure took approximately four years to complete. The ‘Munich Arena’ is to be developed in cooperation with concert promoter Live Nation and will therefore be primarily designed for concerts by well-known artists. “All areas of the arena will be consistently designed for the best possible concert experience,” says the project developer. This includes high-quality acoustics, good visibility of the stage, and optimal production conditions for organizers.
Opening Planned for 2029, Olympic Potential Considered
According to SWMunich Real Estate GmbH, the arena is scheduled to open in 2029. However, a spokesperson for the project developer stated that the start date for construction is not yet definitive. “Until then, various planning and project steps are still pending, which will take some time.”
The multi-functional hall, which with its diamond-shaped struts is intended to be an eye-catcher on the airport feeder road and accessible by car and S-Bahn, is also planned as a possible venue in Munich’s bid for the Olympic and Paralympic Summer Games: It meets the requirements to host swimming competitions.
Economic and Cultural Impetus for Freising
The mayor of Freising, Monika Schwind (Freisinger Mitte), said: “The concert arena can become an important cultural and economic impulse for our city and the region.” Especially in economically difficult times, such projects are “a ray of hope – if they are carefully planned, transparently accompanied, and responsibly implemented.”
The project aims to bring significant cultural and economic benefits to the region, creating new job opportunities and enhancing the city’s profile as a cultural hub. The arena’s design emphasizes functionality and aesthetic appeal, making it a landmark structure in the area.
Further Steps and Project Timeline
While the planning hurdle has been overcome, several stages remain before construction can commence. These include detailed architectural planning, securing financing, and obtaining all necessary construction permits. The project team is committed to a transparent process, keeping the public informed about progress.
The collaboration with Live Nation underscores the arena’s focus on attracting top-tier musical acts, promising a diverse range of entertainment options for residents and visitors alike. The facility’s versatility also allows for hosting various other events, including sports and corporate functions, further boosting its economic impact.
The ‘Munich Arena’ is poised to become a significant addition to the cultural landscape of Bavaria, offering a state-of-the-art venue for large-scale events and contributing to the region’s development.
