Hamburg, 9 July 2026 – The start of the summer holidays in Hamburg has brought with it a wave of new construction projects, leading to anticipated traffic jams and disruptions for motorists and public transport users alike. The State Enterprise for Roads, Bridges and Waters (LSBG) is utilising the period of reduced traffic to carry out essential infrastructure upgrades across the city.
Major Roadworks Underway
One of the most significant projects commencing this week is the extensive road renewal in the Andreas-Meyer-Straße / Unterer Landweg area of Billbrook. In a rapid five-day operation, nearly 6,000 square metres of road – an area equivalent to a football field – are being resurfaced. Construction crews will be working from dawn until dusk until Sunday evening to complete this crucial upgrade.
Another major disruption is the multi-week full closure of Friedensallee in Ottensen, starting today. This closure is necessary for the expansion of pedestrian and cycling paths, aiming to improve active travel infrastructure in the district.
Further roadworks are intensifying in Stellingen and Lokstedt, specifically along the Sportplatzring / Koppelstraße / Julius-Vosseler-Straße / Vogt-Wells-Straße thoroughfare. Since Monday, only one lane has been open between Kieler Straße and Siemersplatz, contributing to considerable congestion in these areas.
Public Transport Facing Significant Disruptions
Commuters relying on Hamburg’s public transport system will also face challenges. A one-week closure has begun between Wilhelmsburg and Hammerbrook on the S-Bahn lines. This closure is to facilitate the removal of ballast and preparation for the installation of new points. Consequently, the S3 and S5 lines will be replaced by buses, which will not stop at the Elbbrücken.
Adding to the public transport woes, a major construction site will halt traffic on the U1 U-Bahn line around Ohlsdorf for 13 weeks. The first section of this closure is effective from Friday, impacting daily commutes for thousands of residents.
Furthermore, the Deutsche Bahn has extended the full closure of the route from Hamburg Hauptbahnhof via Dammtor to Altona from four to six weeks. This protracted closure will continue to affect long-distance and regional train services, with many trains either cancelled or rerouted to alternative stations.
Official Statements and Rationale
The LSBG has stated that these construction efforts are critical for maintaining and improving Hamburg’s infrastructure. They argue that while inconvenient, these projects address long-standing issues such as potholes and are best undertaken during periods of lower traffic volume, such as the summer holidays.
“Those who complain about potholes should not simultaneously complain about road renovations,” an LSBG spokesperson commented, highlighting the necessity of these works despite the temporary inconvenience.
Impact on Residents and Travellers
These concurrent construction projects are expected to place significant strain on Hamburg’s transport network. Residents and visitors are advised to allow extra time for their journeys, consider alternative routes, and utilise real-time traffic information services. The city’s transport authorities are working to minimise disruption, but widespread delays are inevitable given the scale of the works.
The current traffic situation in and around Hamburg, including real-time updates on traffic jams, construction sites, and hazards, is being continuously monitored and communicated by local authorities.
