Munich Tram System Gains Four New Dual-Mode Work Vehicles

Munich, September 23, 2026 – The Munich Public Utilities (SWM) and the Munich Transport Company (MVG) are taking proactive steps to enhance the resilience of Munich’s tram system, particularly in preparation for winter conditions. A key component of this strategy is the acquisition of four new dual-mode work vehicles designed for tram operations. The first of these vehicles was officially handed over to SWM/MVG at the InnoTrans 2026 trade fair in Berlin by sales partner Henne Nutzfahrzeuge, in collaboration with manufacturer Daimler Truck and supplier G. Zwiehoff GmbH.

Fleet Expansion and Replacement

Two of the newly acquired vehicles will replace older Unimog models, while the remaining two will serve to expand and strengthen the existing fleet. This strategic upgrade aims to modernize the maintenance capabilities of the Munich tram network.

Versatile Year-Round Operations

While the Unimogs were primarily procured for snow removal and gritting operations during winter, as well as for trimming bushes and shrubs in the summer, their utility extends far beyond seasonal tasks. These versatile vehicles can be deployed year-round for a variety of critical functions, including the cleaning of tram stops, deployment on construction sites, and for various crane operations.

Official Statements on the Acquisition

Sinaida Cordes, Authorized Signatory for SWM/MVG, emphasized the immediate benefits of the new additions: “With these Unimogs, we are quickly receiving four modern vehicles that we can use year-round and in a versatile manner to maintain and clean our track systems. This is a first step in our strategy for a more resilient tram in Munich. In addition, we plan to procure further rail-only work vehicles.”

Advanced Vehicle Specifications

The new vehicles are built upon the robust chassis of the Unimog U 423. They are equipped with specialized superstructures, including gritting equipment, a snow plough, a mower, a vacuum cleaner, and a crane, all provided by Henne Nutzfahrzeuge. A crucial addition is the 2-way system from Zwiehoff, which enables rapid on-railing within the network and allows for flexible use on both roads and rails.

Standardized Basis for Enhanced Efficiency

A significant advantage of these new vehicles is their uniform basis. This standardization simplifies both operational deployment and the training of driving personnel, leading to greater efficiency and reduced training times. Each Unimog is fitted with a modern and comfortable workstation, and all vehicles can be effortlessly monitored by the MVG control center via the Intermodal Transport Control System (ITCS), which is the operational control system for public transport. The modular design of these vehicles ensures that all four can be precisely adapted to different tasks as required.
