Hamburg, December 10 – A new ‘GoBanyo’ shower bus, specifically designed for homeless individuals, has been completed after two months of construction. The project, which involved transforming a former public transport bus, cost approximately 300,000 Euros and was entirely financed through donations. The bus is expected to commence operations in Hamburg from January.

Enhanced Facilities for Improved Hygiene

The new ‘GoBanyo’ bus boasts several significant improvements over its predecessor, which served 33,000 people over the past six years. Key features include larger shower cabins, hand showers instead of ceiling-mounted units, and modern LED lighting. Additionally, the bus is equipped with robust stainless steel basins, increased storage space, and smart technology to enhance user experience and operational efficiency.

The transformation of the former Hochbahn line bus into this specialized facility underscores a commitment to providing dignified and accessible hygiene solutions for the homeless population in Hamburg. The design considerations focused on creating a more comfortable and practical environment for users.

Funding and Impact

The substantial cost of 300,000 Euros for the conversion was met through various donations, highlighting community support for this vital service. This funding allowed for the integration of high-quality materials and advanced features, ensuring the bus’s durability and effectiveness in serving its purpose.

The previous ‘GoBanyo’ model demonstrated the critical need for such services, having provided showers to an impressive 33,000 individuals. The introduction of the new bus is anticipated to further expand this reach and improve the quality of service offered, directly addressing a fundamental need for hygiene among the city’s homeless.

Future Operations and Community Support

Scheduled to be on the streets of Hamburg from January, the new ‘GoBanyo’ shower bus represents a continuous effort to support vulnerable populations. The initiative not only provides essential hygiene facilities but also fosters a sense of dignity and care for those experiencing homelessness.

The project was featured on NDR Fernsehen’s Hamburg Journal on December 10, 2025, at 19:30, bringing wider attention to the importance of such community-driven efforts. The ongoing success of the ‘GoBanyo’ project relies heavily on public and private support, ensuring its sustainability and ability to meet the growing demands for its services.
