New Student Residence in HafenCity Opens, Addresses Housing Shortage
Hamburg, September 8 – After approximately three and a half years of construction, the Studierendenwerk Hamburg officially opened its new student residence in HafenCity on Monday. Located at Kirchenpauerstraße, on the eastern edge of the Elbbrückenquartier, the new building offers 374 housing units for students and trainees.
The first residents began moving into their new homes on September 1. The seven-story complex features 260 apartments, including one-room apartments with private bathrooms and kitchenettes, as well as rooms in two- to five-person shared flats. The residence also includes common rooms, a 200-square-meter rooftop terrace, and a green inner courtyard.
Affordable Rent and Comprehensive Amenities
According to Studierendenwerk Hamburg, the monthly rent for these units is approximately 500 Euros. This fee is all-inclusive, covering ancillary costs such as heating, electricity, water, and internet. The total investment for the project is estimated at around 62 million Euros, with financing supported by the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg.
Addressing a Significant Demand
With the addition of this new facility, Studierendenwerk Hamburg now provides approximately 4,770 housing units. However, the demand for student housing in the city remains significantly higher. As of early September, more than 1,800 prospective tenants were on the waiting list, highlighting the ongoing need for affordable student accommodation.
Call for Increased Public Funding
Studierendenwerk Hamburg emphasizes that the planned construction of an additional 2,000 student housing units can only be achieved with “significantly expanded public funding.” This statement underscores the financial challenges and the critical role of municipal support in addressing the housing crisis for students in Hamburg.
