Demonstration Against Hospital Closure in Hamburg-Wilhelmsburg
Hamburg, April 10 – Approximately 100 residents of Hamburg-Wilhelmsburg took to the streets on Friday to protest the planned closure of Gross-Sand Hospital. The demonstration, organized by the ‘Zukunft Elbinsel’ association, took place directly in front of the hospital, with participants expressing their strong opposition to the decision.
The protest comes as the Archdiocese of Hamburg plans to permanently close the hospital at the end of June. Demonstrators emphasized that they cannot accept the closure, particularly given the critical need for comprehensive medical services in the Wilhelmsburg district.
Demands for Emergency Room and Surgery Department
According to the ‘Zukunft Elbinsel’ association, the prospect of a new district clinic is insufficient to meet the community’s needs. The association insists that Wilhelmsburg continues to require an emergency room and a surgery department, neither of which are currently planned for the proposed new facility.
A spokesperson for the ‘Zukunft Elbinsel’ association stated, “We cannot accept the closure of Gross-Sand Hospital. Wilhelmsburg needs a functioning emergency room and a surgery department. These are essential services for our community, and the current plans do not adequately address this need.”
Hospital Closure by End of June
The Archdiocese of Hamburg has confirmed its intention to close Gross-Sand Hospital by the end of June. This decision has been met with significant resistance from local residents and community organizations who fear the impact on healthcare provision in the area.
The demonstration highlighted the community’s concern over access to vital medical care, especially for urgent cases. The absence of an emergency room and surgical facilities in the new clinic plans is a major point of contention for the protesters.
Community Mobilization and Future Actions
The ‘Zukunft Elbinsel’ association has been at the forefront of the opposition, actively mobilizing residents and advocating for the retention of essential services. The Friday protest underscored the community’s determination to fight for their healthcare infrastructure.
Further actions and discussions are expected as the deadline for the hospital’s closure approaches. The association has indicated its commitment to continuing its efforts to ensure that Wilhelmsburg retains the necessary medical facilities.
The protest, which drew around 100 participants, proceeded peacefully, with demonstrators conveying their message through banners and chants. The event was covered by local media, including NDR 90,3, which broadcast a report on the demonstration.
The issue of hospital closures and the provision of adequate healthcare services remains a significant concern for many communities in Germany, with local protests often serving as a key means of expressing public discontent and advocating for change.
