Rail Disruptions Expected in Hamburg During Summer Holidays
Hamburg, June 7 – Travelers and commuters in Hamburg must prepare for significant rail disruptions during the upcoming summer holidays. Deutsche Bahn has announced extensive closures on the so-called ‘Verbindungsbahn’ (connecting line) between Hamburg Central Station (Hauptbahnhof) and Altona, impacting both long-distance and S-Bahn services.
The main closure will take place from July 14 to August 20, during which no trains will operate between Hamburg Central Station and Altona. Deutsche Bahn has indicated that this will lead to numerous detours, cancellations, and timetable adjustments.
S-Bahn Services Also Affected
S-Bahn passengers will also experience significant changes. Specifically, lines S2, S5, and S7 will be affected between Altona and Sternschanze from July 17 to August 13. During this period, commuters will need to switch to replacement buses.
Background: Bridge Renewals and Station Relocation
The closures are necessitated by ongoing construction work, as Deutsche Bahn is renewing three railway bridges. The reconstruction of the railway overpasses at Schanzenstraße and Holstenstraße, as well as the Sternbrücke, has been underway for some time.
Additionally, crucial work for the relocation of Altona station will be carried out. The new long-distance station Altona is being rebuilt approximately two kilometers north, at the S-Bahn station Diebsteich. This new station is scheduled to commence operations by the end of 2029.
Hamburg-Berlin Line Open from Mid-June
In related news, the heavily used rail line between Hamburg and Berlin will be fully operational again from mid-June. Travelers may still face minor delays on long-distance services. The route was originally planned to reopen on May 1.
The section between Hamburg and Schwerin has already been completed, allowing trains to run through to Berlin from mid-June. Construction work is also ongoing between Hamburg and Hanover, which may cause further regional disruptions.
These extensive construction measures are part of a broader general overhaul of the rail network in Northern Germany, aiming to modernize infrastructure and improve service reliability in the long term.
Commuters are advised to check Deutsche Bahn’s official channels and journey planners regularly for the latest information on specific detours, cancellations, and replacement services during the affected periods.
