Routine Traffic Stop Escalates in Neukölln, Police Officer Injured

Berlin, May 8 – A routine traffic stop in Berlin-Neukölln yesterday afternoon, May 7, at approximately 5:24 PM, led to a dangerous incident where a rental car rammed a police vehicle, injuring one officer. The incident unfolded near Wanzlikpfad and Uthmannstraße.

According to police reports, a 21-year-old man was driving a rental car at excessive speed near Wanzlikpfad and almost hit a 39-year-old pedestrian. Police officers located the vehicle shortly after in the Uthmannstraße area.

Suspects Flee After Collision

Upon being stopped, the 21-year-old driver and a passenger exited the vehicle. The driver reportedly left the gear selector in the ‘D’ (drive) position. As a result, the rental car moved forward uncontrollably and collided with a parked police patrol car. Both men then fled the scene on foot.

Emergency services quickly pursued the suspects. The 21-year-old driver was apprehended a short time later. During the arrest, the suspect resisted, and a police officer sustained abrasions to his knees.

Suspect Under the Influence, Lacks Driver’s License

During the subsequent investigation, officers found prescription medication in the suspect’s possession and noted signs of possible intoxication. Furthermore, the 21-year-old was unable to produce a valid driver’s license.

The arrested individual was taken to a police detention center for a blood sample. Following the completion of police procedures, he was released.

Ongoing Investigation into the Incident

The police are continuing their investigation into the incident, including the circumstances surrounding the collision, the suspect’s alleged intoxication, and the lack of a driver’s license. The extent of the damage to the police vehicle and the rental car has not yet been fully detailed.

This incident highlights the inherent dangers faced by police officers during routine traffic stops and the unpredictable nature of such encounters.
