Berlin, September 1 – A significant security lapse occurred at the Berlin House of Representatives yesterday, August 31, 2026, when a man managed to enter the plenary hall and disrupt a session. The incident, which took place despite recently reinforced security protocols, has prompted an investigation by the police.

Man Breaches Security, Overpowered by Bodyguards

The individual, reportedly a refugee residing in Spandau, gained access to the building and the plenary hall without significant obstacles, passing by internal security guards. The disruption occurred shortly before the summer recess. The heightened security measures had been implemented just three weeks prior to the 2026 Berlin elections, following an earlier incident in early July.

According to reports, it was only the bodyguards of Interior Senator Iris Spranger (SPD), stationed in the foyer of the plenary hall, who were able to apprehend the intruder. Three plainclothes officers reportedly tackled the man, forced him to the ground, and handcuffed him before handing him over to the police.

Motive and Allegations: “I am angry with the government”

The man allegedly stated to an officer, “I am angry with the government,” as his motive. A police spokesperson confirmed that an investigation has been launched “due to suspicion of disturbing the activity of a legislative body (§106b StGB) and for assault. The man was also issued a ban from the premises.”

The intruder had initially gained access to the visitor’s gallery of the plenary hall using a visitor’s pass. There, he reportedly exhibited conspicuous behavior, gesturing wildly and speaking loudly. Furthermore, a knife was allegedly discovered in the man’s bag at the cloakroom. The State Security (Staatsschutz) has commenced investigations. However, according to the police, the man was not carrying a weapon on his person when he entered the plenary hall.

Questions Arise Over Security Protocols

The incident raises serious questions about how the man, potentially with a knife in his possession, managed to bypass the stringent security checks at the building’s entrance. The entrance procedures are comparable to those at airports, requiring all bags to be X-rayed, laptops and mobile phones to be placed in separate trays, and individuals to pass through metal detectors.

This security breach highlights potential vulnerabilities in the protective measures of a key legislative institution, especially in light of recent enhancements. The ongoing investigations by the police and State Security are expected to shed more light on the exact sequence of events and identify any systemic failures that allowed the intrusion to occur.

The incident underscores the challenges in maintaining absolute security in public buildings while ensuring accessibility for visitors and the smooth functioning of democratic processes. The outcome of the investigations will likely influence future security policies and protocols at the Berlin House of Representatives.
