Security Staff Deployed in Lower Saxony’s Outdoor Pools Amidst Summer Rush
Hamburg, Germany – June 21, 2026 – As temperatures soar, outdoor swimming pools across Lower Saxony are increasingly relying on security personnel to manage the influx of visitors and maintain order. This past hot weekend saw several cities implementing or expanding the use of security or public order forces in their facilities.
In Hanover, security personnel are a standard feature in municipal outdoor pools every summer season, according to city officials. While the city did not specify an expansion compared to previous years, it noted that additional training for staff has been provided by the police. These security teams support existing personnel by ensuring compliance with rules and the smooth operation of the bathing facilities. The deployment is continuously evaluated based on situational needs.
Braunschweig Follows Suit, Focusing on Guest Safety
Braunschweig’s public pool operator, Stadtbad Braunschweig Sport und Freizeit GmbH, also deploys public order services depending on the weather and expected visitor numbers. For this weekend, a single security person was planned for the Bürgerpark outdoor pool. The aim is to provide guests with a sense of security and optimize operational procedures. The company stated that threats and attacks are rare in Braunschweig.
On peak summer days, it is not uncommon for large outdoor pools to host over 3,000 bathers, placing immense pressure on supervisory and cash register staff. Public order forces can assist with enforcing house and bathing rules, addressing issues such as littering, alcohol consumption, or cannabis use.
Supporting Staff and Enhancing Safety
Other responsibilities of the security personnel include identifying unauthorized swimmers and assisting with heavy visitor traffic at the ticket counters. This allows supervisory staff to focus more on water safety. “This allows supervisors to concentrate more on water supervision,” a spokesperson explained.
In Osnabrück, the municipal utility company has been employing a security service at the Moskaubad for several years. A spokesperson clarified that this is not due to an increase in violence but rather to support staff at the poolside and assist bathers with minor injuries, jammed lockers, or other inquiries. Especially on hot days with an estimated 4,000 guests, the focus of trained personnel must remain on the water areas. The deployment of security services has not been expanded in recent years.
The move to enhance security in outdoor pools underscores the challenges faced by public facilities during periods of high demand, aiming to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all visitors.
