Shelton Triumphs in Munich, Making American Clay Court History
Munich, April 19 – American tennis professional Ben Shelton has claimed the ATP tournament title in Munich, writing a small piece of tennis history in the process. The 23-year-old defeated Flavio Cobolli, who had previously ousted Alexander Zverev, with a score of 6:2, 7:5 in the final match. This victory marks the world No. 6’s biggest clay court triumph on the ATP Tour since Andre Agassi’s Masters success in Rome 24 years ago. Shelton converted his first match point after 90 minutes of play. Last year, he was defeated by Zverev in the BMW Open final.
Cobolli’s Emotional Run Ends in Final Defeat
The top German tennis player, Alexander Zverev, missed out on the final this year after a clear loss to Cobolli in Saturday’s semifinal. However, the 23-year-old Italian was unable to capitalize on this performance in the final. Cobolli had previously stirred emotions in Munich when, after his victory over Zverev, he spoke about a tennis friend from his club who had passed away at the age of just 13 on Friday. Cobolli was visibly emotional and shed tears after his win against Zverev.
German Qualifiers Schnaitter and Wallner Secure Doubles Title
Despite Zverev’s early exit, there was German jubilation at the tournament’s conclusion in northern Munich. In the doubles competition, Jakob Schnaitter and Mark Wallner surprisingly secured the first ATP title of their careers. The Bavarian natives, who have been playing together since 2023, had fought their way through qualification into the main draw and then proved unstoppable. In the final, they defeated the French pair Theo Arribage and Albano Olivetti with a score of 6:4, 6:7 (4:7), 12:10.
This unexpected victory for Schnaitter and Wallner marks a significant milestone in their professional careers, adding an exciting German success story to the Munich tournament.
