Technical Problem at Munich Airport Terminal 2 Causes Security Check Delays
Munich, May 14 – A technical problem with security checkpoints at Munich Airport’s Terminal 2 on Wednesday morning led to extensive queues and disruptions for passengers. Approximately half of the 15 security lanes were temporarily closed, a spokesperson confirmed in response to an inquiry.
Passengers Rerouted to Other Checkpoints Amidst Delays
Due to the malfunction, some passengers were transported by bus to security checkpoints in Terminal 1 to undergo screening. The incident also saw one individual receive medical attention for circulatory weakness, as stated by the airport spokesperson.
All Security Lanes Now Operational in Terminal 2
As of Wednesday, all security checkpoints in Terminal 2 have been fully reopened, and operations have returned to normal, according to Munich Airport authorities. The exact cause of the technical malfunction has not yet been determined.
Terminal 2 is primarily utilized by Lufthansa and its Star Alliance partner airlines. The security checkpoints in this terminal were recently upgraded with advanced CT scanners, with the modernization project having been completed just one year ago.
Wider Context: Recent Challenges in German Aviation
This incident comes amidst broader concerns within the German aviation sector. Just last week, on May 9, German airports expressed fears of flight cancellations during the summer due to an ongoing kerosene crisis. It was anticipated that up to 20 million passengers could be affected, particularly those traveling to less touristically significant destinations.
Earlier this week, on May 14, a separate incident involved a cruise ship near Bordeaux, where a stomach virus outbreak led to a partial lifting of quarantine measures after the death of a 92-year-old and illness among 50 passengers. While unrelated to the airport’s technical issue, these events highlight a period of operational challenges across various transport sectors.
Furthermore, on May 13, a severe rear-end collision on the A3 motorway near Schlüsselfeld, where a truck collided with stationary traffic, resulted in the complete closure of the motorway towards Regensburg. Several vehicles were pushed together, and three people and a horse sustained injuries.
These recent events underscore the complexities and potential vulnerabilities within Germany’s transport and public service infrastructure, emphasizing the importance of robust operational protocols and swift response mechanisms.
