Thousands Rally in Berlin for Sustainable Agriculture
Berlin, January 17 – Thousands of people took to the streets of Berlin on Saturday to advocate for more environmentally and animal-friendly agriculture. The demonstration, organized by the “Wir haben es satt” (We are fed up) alliance, coincided with the ongoing Green Week, one of the world’s leading agricultural and food fairs. Police estimated around 5,000 participants, while organizers reported approximately 8,000 demonstrators, including about 40 tractors.
Criticism of Agricultural Policy and Mercosur Agreement
The “Wir haben es satt” alliance sharply criticized the federal government, accusing it of making backward steps in agricultural policy. A key point of contention was the repeated postponement of the planned state animal husbandry labeling, now pushed back to 2027. Jan Greve, spokesperson for the alliance, stated, “The black-red federal government is pursuing an agricultural policy of yesterday and endangering our future. We remind them of their responsibility.” The demonstration was initially registered for 9,000 participants.
The alliance emphasized its commitment to a more biological and ecological agriculture. The protest, held under the motto “Show your stance! For a sustainable agriculture worldwide,” also targeted the trade agreement between the EU and Mercosur states. The alliance argued that this agreement exacerbates price pressure for farmers on both sides of the Atlantic.
Year of Women in Agriculture Highlighted
This year’s “Wir haben es satt!” demonstration was particularly significant as it took place during the International Year of Women in Agriculture. Consequently, only women, non-binary, trans, and agender individuals spoke at the rally, highlighting their crucial role and perspectives in the agricultural sector.
Earlier in the day, a coalition of civil society organizations and agricultural groups delivered a protest note to the Ministry of Agriculture in Berlin. This note warned against the exploitation of water resources by agricultural corporations, underscoring another pressing concern within the agricultural debate.
Green Week as a Backdrop for Protest
The demonstration strategically took place parallel to the Green Week, an international exhibition for food, agriculture, and horticulture. This timing allowed activists to draw maximum attention to their demands for a more sustainable and equitable agricultural system, directly addressing policymakers and industry leaders gathered for the fair.
Broader Implications and Future Outlook
The protest in Berlin reflects a growing public demand for agricultural practices that prioritize environmental protection, animal welfare, and fair conditions for farmers. The criticisms leveled against current policies and international trade agreements highlight complex challenges facing the agricultural sector globally. As discussions continue at Green Week and beyond, the calls for a fundamental shift towards sustainability are likely to intensify, influencing future policy decisions and consumer choices.
The organizers and participants of the “Wir haben es satt” demonstration aim to keep these issues at the forefront of public and political discourse, ensuring that the future of agriculture is debated with a strong emphasis on ecological responsibility and social justice.
