Three Suspects Arrested in Laim Following Bicycle Theft
Munich, May 24, 2026 – Three individuals have been arrested in the Laim district of Munich in connection with a bicycle theft. The arrests took place on Thursday, May 21, 2026, after a 31-year-old woman from Baden-Württemberg recognized her stolen racing bike being ridden by one of the suspects.
The woman, whose racing bike was stolen on Thursday, April 30, 2026, between 6:00 PM and 11:00 PM from outside a house on Camerloherstraße, spotted a 31-year-old German man, a resident of Munich, riding her bicycle while simultaneously pushing another bike. Although she had not reported the initial theft to the police, she immediately alerted emergency services (110) and attempted to follow the suspect on foot.
Police Operation Leads to Quick Apprehension
Despite losing sight of the suspect, a swift police response, involving more than five patrol units, led to the quick apprehension of the 31-year-old man. He was found in the basement of a nearby apartment building along with a 40-year-old Austrian man from Austria and a 27-year-old German woman residing in Munich. Inside a cellar room, authorities discovered the stolen racing bike and two other bicycles suspected of being stolen.
All three individuals were taken into custody and charged with gang theft. The bicycles were secured for evidence, and forensic investigations were conducted. Following the processing of the report and evidence, the 31-year-old woman’s racing bike was returned to her. All three suspects were released after their statements were taken. The Munich Criminal Police are continuing the investigation.
Munich Police Recommendations on Bicycle Theft
The Munich Police emphasize the importance of reporting all bicycle thefts. Investigations are always conducted in such cases. They also advise bicycle owners to note down their bike’s frame number, as this significantly aids in identification and recovery efforts. Reports of bicycle theft can also be filed online.
The police also highlight the ‘Digital Bicycle Depot’ on the Bavarian Police website, where owners can search for their lost or stolen bicycles among recovered items. Furthermore, the ADFC, in cooperation with the Munich Police, regularly organizes bicycle coding events where additional coded owner information is applied to bicycle frames, further assisting police investigations.
Upcoming bicycle coding events:
- Wednesday, June 10, 2026, 1:00 PM – 6:00 PM, at Rathausplatz in Unterhaching
- Wednesday, July 15, 2026, 1:00 PM – 6:00 PM, at Canisiusplatz
- Wednesday, July 22, 2026, 1:00 PM – 6:00 PM, at Forum Schwanthalerhöhe
- Wednesday, September 09, 2026, 1:00 PM – 6:00 PM, in Georg-Birk-Straße (next to the bus stop)
These measures are designed to deter theft and improve the chances of recovery for victims of bicycle crime in Munich.
