Major Road Closures Announced

Several critical arteries will be affected, leading to significant diversions and delays:

  • A7 around the Elbe Tunnel: Closed for 55 hours starting Friday evening.
  • Köhlbrand Bridge: Closed until Monday morning, also starting Friday evening.
  • Nincoper Deich: Closed for one week starting Saturday.
  • Waltershofer Straße: Closed for ten days starting Monday.
  • Rethehubbrücke: Also closed starting Monday.

The Nincoper Deich and Waltershofer Straße are particularly vital as central traffic routes for Neuenfelde, Cranz, Francop, and Finkenwerder, making their concurrent closures a major point of contention.

Local Officials Warn of Unprecedented Gridlock

Ermiya Ciger, head of the SPD district in Neuenfelde, expressed grave concerns to NDR 90,3. “This will cause traffic chaos like we have never seen before in the Altes Land. Where are all the Airbus commuters and trucks supposed to go?” Ciger highlighted the lack of coordination among the various construction projects as the primary cause for the impending crisis.

Traffic Authority Defends Coordination Efforts

Hamburg’s traffic authority has refuted claims of poor coordination, stating that efficient detours will be established. They also pointed out that similar closures have occurred in the past without catastrophic consequences. As a last resort, the ferry service to Finkenwerder remains an option for commuters.

The closures are expected to severely impact daily commutes, especially for those working at Airbus and other businesses in the industrial areas. Truck traffic, essential for logistics and supply chains, will also face considerable delays, potentially affecting regional commerce.

This weekend’s closure of the A7 around the Elbe Tunnel is due to the reconstruction of the tunnel control center, rendering the section between Hamburg-Stellingen and -Heimfeld impassable. The Köhlbrand Bridge closure is for scheduled repair and maintenance work. These are part of ongoing infrastructure projects in Hamburg, including the extensive expansion of the A7, which has been a source of frequent traffic disruptions.
