On the grounds of the former Tempelhof Airport, which currently serves as a large emergency shelter for refugees, several tragic deaths have occurred recently. A spokesperson for the State Office for Refugee Affairs (LAF) confirmed that three people died last year due to alcohol poisoning. Additionally, the authority recorded two suicides, one in 2025 and another in the current year, both of which took place outside the facility.
Further Incidents and Alcohol Problems
In addition to the confirmed deaths, there have been two attempted suicides this year. The spokesperson further explained that there is a group of approximately 50 to 60 residents within the facility who are severely struggling with alcohol problems. These are predominantly older individuals with a long history of substance abuse.
Addressing and Improving Living Conditions
Berlin’s Senator for Labor, Social Affairs, and Integration, Cansel Kiziltepe (SPD), emphasized the need for a complete investigation. She assured that “all incidents are documented, and each incident is consistently addressed.” She stated that only through this approach can existing grievances be effectively tackled. At the same time, the Senator admitted that accommodation in the hangars does not provide ideal conditions for successful integration.
As a closure of the facility is currently not possible, Kiziltepe stated that various improvements have been initiated to ease the daily lives of the residents. “We know that emergency shelters like those in the Tempelhof hangars are not good conditions for the integration of refugees,” the politician explained.
Measures include the hiring of staff with Russian and Ukrainian language skills, as well as the deployment of psychologists specifically trained to care for traumatized individuals. Furthermore, the occupancy of the containers has been reduced, so that now a maximum of three instead of four people live there.
Challenges Posed by Alcohol Consumption and Violence
Currently, the grounds in the hangars and the adjacent containers house around 1,050 people, while another 775 refugees are accommodated in the so-called Tempohomes. The cramped conditions have long been criticized, as frustration and disputes regularly escalate. According to the LAF spokesperson, serious altercations, such as those involving knives, requiring direct reporting to the authorities occur monthly on average.
Alcohol often plays a decisive role in such conflicts. The consumption of hard alcohol, in particular, poses a significant challenge for staff. While alcohol consumption is prohibited within the shelter, this ban cannot be controlled outside the premises. The ongoing situation highlights the complex challenges faced by authorities and aid organizations in providing adequate support and ensuring the well-being of refugees in emergency accommodations.
The authorities continue to work on comprehensive solutions to address both the immediate and long-term needs of the residents, focusing on mental health support, addiction intervention, and creating a safer living environment. The tragic events underscore the urgent need for more suitable and humane housing solutions for refugees, moving beyond temporary emergency shelters towards more sustainable integration strategies.
